Biography of Tie Yang

Born in August 1935 in Zhao County, Hebei Province, to a wealthy family, his grandfather was a general in the old army. His father was a doctor and social activist. He studied in his hometown as a teenager and loved art, and was influenced by two kinds of art, Hebei folk woodblock prints and Christian religious paintings, and his hometown retained a church presided over by a Swedish pastor during the war, which belonged to the Assemblies of God.  1950 Admitted to Hebei Provincial Art School to study painting.  1955 Admitted to the Stage Art Department of the Central Academy of Drama in Beijing, majoring in oil painting and stage art design. Received formal education in Soviet Realism, which was a 5-year undergraduate university.  1959 In his fourth year of college, his oil painting was selected for the Beijing Art Exhibition. In the same year, he made his graduation design for the play "The Bells of the Kremlin". He made a large oil painting of "Dinosaurs" for the China Nature Museum.  1960 At the age of 25, passed the graduation examination and defense, with excellent results in both painting and stage design.  1961 Teaching at the Cultural Arts Institute of Hebei Province. Oil paintings were selected for the first Hebei Provincial Art Exhibition and won the first prize. A batch of oil painting sketches were exhibited at the Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts. Designed the drama "Young Guards" for Hebei Province. Designed the famous opera drama "Pauline Lamp" for Hebei Province.  1962 Oil paintings won the first prize in the Hebei Provincial Art Exhibition.  1963 Worked as a stage designer at the Hebei Opera and Dance Theater, designing several operas and dance dramas.  1964 His works were first exhibited at the National Art Museum of China in Beijing.  1965 Started the "Cultural Revolution" in China, and worked in the "May 7" dry school or rural labor.  1971 Started to travel into the Taihang Mountains for sketching and began to study gouache painting. Since then, he must go to Taihang Mountain every year. Two oil paintings were selected for the Hebei Provincial Art Exhibition and won the gold medal.  1974 A batch of sketches was exhibited in the Art Department of Beijing Normal College.  1975 A batch of life drawing works were exhibited in the Art Department of Beijing Film Academy.  1979 Appointed as a professor in the Stage Art Department of the Central Academy of Drama, his alma mater. Organized a solo exhibition at his alma mater. In Beijing, he initiated the establishment of the Beijing Gouache Painting Research Association with Wu Guanzhong and Zhou Lingzhao, with Wu as the honorary president, Zhou as the president and Tie as the deputy secretary-general. Beijing Gouache Painting Research Association held its first joint exhibition in Beijing. Tie exhibits a number of works. Cooperated with stage artist Qi Mudong in designing the dance drama "Princess Wencheng" for the China Opera and Dance Theater, which won the first prize of excellent design from the Ministry of Culture.  1980 Beijing Gouache Painting Research Association held traveling exhibitions in 10 cities in China, including Changsha and Nanjing. In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Lu Xun's birth, he made the stage design for the play "The True Story of Ah Q" performed by the Central Academy of Drama. 1981 Solo exhibition in Baoding, Hebei, China.  1982 Participated in the Invitational Exhibition of Toronto Artists Gallery (Toronto, Canada). Participated in the 2nd National Stage Art Exhibition (Beijing). Participated in the Japan International Stage Art Exhibition (Tokyo). Included in the Dictionary of Chinese Literary Artists.  1983 Joined the Hebei Painting Academy as a professional painter from Beijing. Participated in the Hebei Provincial Fine Arts Exhibition, and two paintings were awarded prizes. Joined the China Artists Association. Selected as a member of the Hebei Branch of the China Artists Association.  1985 Elected president of Hebei Watercolor and Gouache Painting Research Association. Participated in the 1st National Watercolor and Gouache Painting Exhibition (Hangzhou). Artistic director of the feature film "The Girl in Red" (originally written by Tie Ning) for Emei Film Studio, which won the Golden Rooster Award and the Hundred Flowers Award, the highest prizes in Chinese cinema, "The film won the Golden Rooster Award, the Hundred Flowers Award, and the Government Award for Outstanding Feature Film, the highest awards in Chinese cinema.  1986 Solo exhibition in Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province.  1987 Participated in an art exhibition in France (Paris).  1988 Authorized as a national artist and professor.  1989 Artistic director for the feature film "Oh, Fragrant Snow" (screenplay by Tie Ning) of China Children's Film Studio, which won the highest prize for youth films at the 41st Berlin International Film Festival. Participated in the 7th National Art Exhibition and won the bronze medal. In the same year, he won the Grand Prize again (Shenzhen and Beijing). Jury member of the 7th National Art Exhibition in Hebei. Landscape group painting won the first prize in Hebei. Participated in the 2nd National Oil Painting Exhibition (Nanjing). Participated in the 7th National Art Exhibition (Beijing).  1990 Appointed as a member of the Hebei Province Senior Art Title Review Committee.  1991 Participated in the Japan Asia Asia Art Exhibition (Tokyo). Participated in San Francisco Gouache Invitational Exhibition (San Francisco, USA). Publication of "Tie Yang's Collection of Paintings", which included about 100 paintings. Invited by Lannes Museum of Art, Denmark, to hold a solo exhibition and a lecture on Chinese art in Denmark. A number of works were collected by the museum and Danish artists (Denmark). Ink painting for Queen Margrethe II of Denmark. Traveled to Norway, Russia and other countries for art study, and gave lectures at the University of Oslo.  1992 Received the highest government award - Literature and Art Revitalization Award in Hebei Province. Participated in the 2nd National Watercolor and Gouache Painting Exhibition (Xuzhou).  1993 Included in the Biographies of Chinese Literary Artists. Made framed illustrations for the Japanese edition of Tie Ning's Novel Collection by Tokyo Modern Literature Publishing House. Participated in the Singapore Chinese Oil Painting Exhibition (Singapore).  In the spring of 1994, held a solo exhibition at the National Art Museum of China in Beijing. A number of works were harvested by the National Art Museum of China. A number of works were collected by the Netherlands Museum of Art and collectors in the United States, Britain, France and Asia. The Asia Art Museum in Korea began to collect Tie Yang's works year by year, and the museum will set up a "Tie Yang Hall", where his works will be permanently displayed. He was a member of the jury of the 8th National Art Exhibition. Participated in the 8th National Art Exhibition and won the Gold Medal in the same year. Art director for CCTV Tie Ning's prose TV series "Daughter of the River".  1995 Traveled to the U.S.A. for art investigation. Held the "Research Exhibition of Tie Yang's Works" in the gallery of Hebei Painting Academy. Included in the Dictionary of Chinese Artists in the World.  In 1996, he was a member of the jury of the First Watercolor Painting Art Exhibition in China. His works were invited to participate in the First Watercolor Art Exhibition of China. Designed the binding for the 5-volume "Tie Ning's Anthology". Elected as a delegate to the 5th Chinese Artists' Congress.  1997 Traveled to France, Italy, Germany, Holland, Switzerland and other countries. Held "European Traveling Sketch Exhibition" in Hebei Painting Academy.  1998 In May, he was invited to travel to South Korea and made an art investigation. September, he attended the 5th Chinese Artists' Congress. Appointed by the China Artists Association as a member of the Art Committee of the China Artists Association. Participated in the National Life Drawing Exhibition (Beijing). Made large city sculpture and large square mural "Joy" for Shijiazhuang, capital of Hebei Province (Shijiazhuang).  1999 Appointed Director of the Academic Committee of Hebei Artists Association. Judge for the 9th National Art Exhibition (Nanjing). His works were invited to participate in the 9th National Art Exhibition. Edited and published "Selected Works of Tie Yang". Edited and published Selected Works of Tie Yang.  2000 Went to Russia for art investigation. Juror for the 5th National Watercolor Exhibition (Guangzhou). His works were invited to participate in the 5th National Watercolor Exhibition.  2001 Jury member of the National Watercolor Figure Painting Exhibition (Shenyang). His works were invited to participate in the National Watercolor Figure Painting Exhibition.  2002 Jury member of the 6th National Watercolor Exhibition (Shanghai). His works were invited to participate in the 6th National Watercolor Painting Exhibition. Awarded again the highest prize of Hebei Provincial Government - Literature and Art Revitalization Prize.  In March 2003, he was a member of the jury of the National Pastel Painting Exhibition (Suzhou). Juror for the 3rd National Oil Painting Exhibition. Invited to participate in the 3rd National Oil Painting Exhibition (Beijing), May, held a solo exhibition at the Miral Art Museum in Seoul, Korea, and traveled to Korea for sketching, August, member of the jury of the National Small-Scale Watercolor Painting Exhibition (Fuzhou), August, member of the jury of the National Small-Scale Watercolor Painting Exhibition (Fuzhou). His works were invited to participate in the National Small Watercolor Exhibition, and in November, in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the conclusion of the friendship between Nagano Prefecture and Hebei Province, and the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Shinano Sketch Museum, he was invited to hold the "Tie Yang Exhibition" in Nagano Prefecture, Japan.
