Sha Tau Kok Fish Lantern Dance originated in the Qianlong period in the early Qing Dynasty and has a history of more than 300 years. Today, I created a performance in Shalanxia Village, Shatoujiao Street, Yantian District. Popular in Sha Tau Kok, Yantian, Danshuikeng and Gangxia New Village in the New Territories of Hong Kong. Fish lantern dance has no written records, but it has been passed down from generation to generation. It is a necessary program for fishermen to worship their ancestors at festivals. Fish lanterns are beautifully made, tied into fish shapes with bamboo sticks, coated with tung oil on paper, and fitted with short sticks, dancing in the sea like fish. Accompaniment instruments include gongs, drums, cymbals, suona, horns and so on. The traditional fish lantern dance has twenty-five fish, but now it has been reduced to eighteen. The fish lantern dance was once lost, but it was finally passed down after the villagers dug, arranged and rehearsed it in 2003. "Sha Tau Kok Fish Lantern Dance" has been publicized through the first batch of intangible cultural heritage list in Guangdong Province.
Wenzhou Yueqing Fish Lantern Dance usually consists of twelve fish lanterns, commonly known as "Twelve Dragons".
