Don't read many biographies, and these are very enjoyable.
The most interesting parts of reading are outside of reading. I connected with Van Gogh because of Catton in A Tale of Two Cities.
Van Gogh told Theo more than once in his letters that he was reading Dickens, and after reading Dear Theo, I sought out A Tale of Two Cities to read. After reading it, I was stubbornly convinced that Catton was Van Gogh's favorite.
Catton loved Lucy, and Lucy loved Darnay. Coincidentally, Darnay and Carton look exactly alike. Dickens went to great lengths to rationalize this story. The woman he loves marries a man who looks exactly like him, and Carton's heart is in his mouth. Is it over? No. Darnay is sentenced to death, and the terminally ill Carton switches identities with Darnay, taking the place of his only rival in the guillotine. Carton gave his life for love with aplomb.
