Putuo District, belonging to Shanghai, is located in the northwestern part of Shanghai's central city, bordered by Jiading District and Baoshan District in the west and north, and adjoined by Jing'an District and Changning District in the east and south, with a total area of 55.53 square kilometers. Putuo District is a major land and water transportation route in the western part of Shanghai, named after the Putuo Road within its territory. The Wusong River (commonly known as the Suzhou River) crosses the whole territory and is an inland waterway connecting the Taihu Lake basin in the west and the Huangpu River and Yangtze River in the east. Suzhou River flows through Putuo District 14 kilometers, the shoreline is 21 kilometers long. the late 19th century, Chinese and foreign businessmen with the Wusong River water transportation, have built factories on both sides of the river, promoting the development of the territory's economy, and gradually become Shanghai's famous old industrial area.
Putuo District Location and Environment
The center of Putuo District is located at longitude 121°39' east, latitude 31°25' north, located in the northwest of downtown Shanghai. East from Hutai Road, Peng Yue Pu, Suzhou River and Jing'an District border, south along the Suzhou River, Wanhangdu Road, Changshou Road, Anyuan Road and Changning District, Jing'an District adjacent to the west to the Shanghai-Nanjing Railway, Huanbang border with Jiading District, the north up to the Zhennan Road, Xuejiabang, Lingshi Road and Jiading District, Baoshan District connected. The Suzhou River crosses east and west in the district, and it is 7.5 kilometers away from the People's Square in the city center.
Putuo District territory is flat, is the estuary coastal alluvial plain. As the Yangtze River carries a large amount of sediment into the sea, continuous siltation, the coastline gradually shifted to the east, the territory has become land before the Tang Dynasty. Due to the lower reaches of the Wusong River, the evolution of the land is different from the neighboring districts and counties. The north and south sides of the tributary rivers are densely packed and crisscrossed, forming a water network.
