On February 12, 2011, the "2011 Chaozhou Big Drum and Gong Competition" was successfully concluded in People's Square. After a fierce competition, the big drum and gong team of Yixi Town, Xiangqiao District and the drum and gong team of Oupu Township of Yixi Town were awarded the gold medal; and seven drum and gong teams including the drum and gong team of Puhan Village of Phosgene Township, the big drum and gong team of Xiasi, Huanggang Town, Raoping County, the drum and gong team of Yingtang, Fengxi District, and so on were awarded the silver medal. Seven gong and drum teams won silver awards.
The Chaozhou big gong competition is one of the activities of the 2011 China Chaozhou Lantern Festival, two counties and two districts after the preliminary rounds, *** selected nine outstanding gong teams to participate in the final rounds of the competition, the competition using a stage fixed performance by the way, by the expert ruling and leading the referee on-site assessment of the form of bright scores, the activities of each team dressed in a variety of colorful ethnic costumes, bring their own musical instruments and take turns on the stage to perform the final rounds of the competition, the same competition, each showing their talent. Compete on the same stage, each show their talent; resound through the sky of the drums and strings music, sometimes majestic, like thousands of horses; sometimes cheerful and bright, crisp and touching, fully demonstrated the Chaozhou music, Chaozhou big drums and gongs of the unique vitality.
Huang Yixiao, a 74-year-old expert judge who is the inheritor of the Chaozhou big gongs and drums (enjoying the expert allowance of the State Council), believed that the competition fully demonstrated the high level of Chaozhou music and Chaozhou big gongs and drums, and said that in order to let the Chaozhou music and Chaozhou big gongs and drums be succeeded by new generations and to promote the better inheritance of the Chaozhou national culture, he intended to tilt the scoring to the young gongs and drums team, in order to motivate the future generation to participate in and promote the music. The scoring was intended to be skewed towards the younger gong teams to inspire the future generation to participate and promote them. When he learned that many of the teams in the competition were fathers and sons and fathers and daughters performing on the same stage, he expressed his relief.
The two teams that won the gold medals, the Yixi Township Big Drum and Drum Team and the Yixi Township Rubber Pu Township Drum and Drum Team, will be the representative teams of the Chaozhou Big Drums and Drums to take part in the Folklore Culture Parade after the lighting ceremony of this year's Chaozhou Lantern Festival.
