I The Birth of Kaguya Hime
Once upon a time, there was an old man. He used to go to the mountains to cut bamboo and make bamboo baskets, bamboo cages, and other wares, which he sold to others to make ends meet. His name was Sanuki Zomaru. One day, he went to cut bamboo as usual. He saw a bright light coming from one of the bamboo poles. He thought it was strange, so he went closer and saw that there was light coming out of the bamboo tube. When he came closer and examined it more closely, it turned out that a small man, about three inches long, was living inside. So the old man said, "You live in the bamboo that I see every day, so of course you are my child." So he took the child in his hands and brought it home.
The old man gave the child to the old woman at home to raise. The child grew very lovely and beautiful, and her body was so small that she had to be kept in a basket.
Since the old man had gotten the child, every time he went to cut down bamboo, he found much gold in the bamboo tubes. So the old man became a rich man very quickly.
The child grew up day by day under the old woman's care, just as a bamboo shoot turns into a bamboo. After thirty months, the child was turned into a girl. So the old woman put her hair in a bun and dressed her in a skirt. And the old man kept her in his house, and would not let her go out, but loved her exceedingly. Meanwhile, the child grew more and more beautiful, so that the house was filled with light up to her, and there was no darkness anywhere. Sometimes when the old man's heart was troubled, he saw the child, and all his pain and trouble disappeared. And when he was angry about something, he saw the child, and immediately his heart was at peace.
The child grew up. The old man went to the Mimurodo district and asked a man named Akita Saibe to give her a name. Akita named her "Kaguya-hime of the Young Bamboo". It can also be written as "Kaguya-hime," meaning that she shone brightly even at night. After the name was given, the old man threw a big banquet and invited various kinds of dancers and singers to perform. All the people in the neighborhood, young and old, were invited to the feast, which lasted for three days.

Those who knew that they had no hope, and that it was in vain to wander here, turned back and came no more. But there were fifty famous people who always continued to come and imitate. They still dreamed day and night. One of them was the Prince of Shiho, another was the Prince of Cheju, another was the Right Minister, Master Abe, and another was the Great Nayan, Oyasumi Miyuki, and the last was the Middle Nayan, Ishigami Maru. People like them, whenever they heard of a beautiful woman anywhere, even if it was just an unusual one, they wanted to go and see it immediately. When they heard of Kaguya-hime's great name, their hearts were even more excited, and they were so spellbound that they wasted their sleep and food; they often wandered around Kaguya-hime's house at a loss, but to no avail. But all this was still useless. So they went back to their original thought: despite what the old man said, could the woman remain unmarried for life? So they wandered around Kaguya-hime's house as usual, trying to show their sincerity.
When the old man saw this, he said to Kaguya-hime, "My noblest girl! You are the reincarnation of a god or a Buddha, not the child of my old man. But after all, it was I who took the trouble to raise you to adulthood, so can you listen to me for the sake of this little bit of hard work of mine?"
Kaguya-hime replied, "Oops! I will listen to any words. But you say that I am the reincarnation of a divine Buddha, I know nothing of that now. I only know that you are my real father Naiya!"
The old man said, "Ah, that could not be better! I am now past my ancient age. I may say that today or tomorrow, I will scatter my hands and die. I have one thing to say to you: as a person, as long as has been born in this world, the man must marry his wife, the woman must marry her husband, this is the rule of the world. Only in this way can the gateway grow and the population flourish. It is you, who should also follow this path yet."
Kaguya-hime said, "There is such a thing, but I just don't want to."
The old man said, "Listen to me! Although you are the reincarnation of a god or a Buddha, you are still a woman. Now that I am still alive in the world, I might as well live my life like this. If I die, what should you do? Those five men, who have come for years to seek imitation from afar, show that they are y in love with you. They all declare that they want to marry you. You should make up your mind early and make a choice to be betrothed to one of them, what do you think?"
Kaguya-hime replied, "Alas, how vulgar these people are. To be betrothed to a person without knowing the other person's heart will teach one to regret it if he later changes his mind. No matter how high the status of the other person is or how good he looks, to betroth him without knowing his heart, I will never agree."
"Well, you have a point," the old man nodded in agreement. Again, he said the same thing, "So, what kind of person do you really want to be betrothed to? All five of those men seem to be very sincere with you."
Kaguya-hime replied, "As for what kind of person it should be, I don't have any special requirements, just one small one. Since of the five people recorded, no matter which one is sincere, it's impossible to tell which one is superior and which one is inferior? Then, I hope that whoever can fetch me my favorite thing will be the most sincere, and I will be that person's wife. Please say this to them."
"That is indeed a good idea." The old man voiced his approval.
The five men came in the evening. Some of them played flutes, some sang songs, some chanted waka, some played mouth chords, and some beat the beat with their fans. They did this for no other reason than to draw Kaguya-hime out. The old man came out and addressed them:
"O lords, you are not worthy to come to my barren place after so many long years! I have passed the age of old age, and am like a candle in the wind, and I am at the end of my days. Therefore I have said to my girl, that she should consider seriously, and choose a husband among you five earnest lords of the city. The girl said, 'How can I know to what extent they love me?' And there was truth in that. She added, 'It is difficult to tell which of you five lords is superior and which is inferior. Therefore, whoever among the five of you can bring her her favorite thing to her will show who loves her the most, and she will marry him. I thought that was a good solution, and none of you will resent me."
When the five men heard this, they all said, "That is indeed a good way." The old man then went in and conveyed this to Kaguya Hime.
The Kaguya-hime said, "Well then, you will say to the Emperor Shiho that there is a stone bowl of the Buddha in the Celestial Kingdom, and ask him to go and fetch it for me.
"Say to the royal son of the Cheju, that there is a mountain of Penglai in the East Sea, and that there is a tree on the mountain, whose roots are of silver, and whose trunk is of gold, and that the village bears the fruit of alabaster, and tell him to go and fetch and bring it for me.
"Tell that right minister to fetch me the fire-rat furs of Tang Tu. Tell the great Nayan to fetch me the jade that glows with five colors on the dragon's head. As for the middle nayan on the stone, tell him to fetch me a swallow's zi'anbei."
The old man said with difficulty, "Alas, this is making things difficult for them. These are not all the things in the country. How can I ask them to open their mouths and convey something so difficult?"
Seeing the old man's difficulty, Kaguya Hime said, "What's so difficult about it! You just go ahead and say it to them."
The old man went out and delivered Kaguya-hime's words as they were. The princes and dignitaries heard it, and were so stunned that they said, knowing themselves to be hopeless, "It would have been better for you to ask such a difficult question, than to say with alacrity, 'You are not permitted to linger here.'"' Everyone hung his head and went home.
