What is the main content of the ballet Don Quixote?

The ballet Don Quixote, composed by Ming Kusi and directed by Marius Petipa, premiered at the Royal Moscow Grand Theatre on February 26th. 1869. The main contents are as follows:

1, Preface-A Study of Don Quixote

Don Quixote, who was born in a noble family, was addicted to knight novels. He always fantasized that he was loyal to a beautiful hostess, Dulcina, and fought for it, even killing demons. Suddenly, he saw his huge figure reflected on the wall by the fire, thinking it was the monster mentioned in the book, so he fought with his sword and finally fell asleep in bed.

His servants were so depressed that they finally threw all his knight novels into the fireplace. Then in a burst of noise, Sancho was chased by a group of women and woke Don Quixote. They accused Sancho of stealing their things, and Don Quixote protected Sancho and sent them away. Don Quixote was in high spirits at once, so he put on his knight's costume and took his servant Sancho on a journey to pursue Dulcina's elegance.

2. Scene 1-Barcelona Market

Katie and Basilio are a couple, but their love is strongly opposed by Katie's pub owner's father. He doesn't want his daughter to marry a poor boy who cuts people's hair, but wants her to marry a rich local gentleman, Garmarsh. The arrival of Don Quixote makes the situation more complicated, because Katie looks exactly like Dulcina in his fantasy.

The arrival of Espada, the matador, further increased the joyful atmosphere of the fair. Finally, Kitty eloped with Basilio under the cover of matador and friends, followed by angry Camacho, Kitty's father and Don Quixote. The whole scene ended in a festive group dance.

3. Act II Scene 1-Gypsy Camp by Windmill

Katie and Basilio met the local gypsies romantically in the wild. The gypsies warmly welcomed the couple, and everyone was singing and dancing. When Don Quixote arrived, he saw the windmill moving with the wind and thought it was a monster that bared his teeth, so he ignored everyone's persuasion, fought with it and finally fainted.

4. Act II Scene II-Don Quixote's Dream

It may also be "the elegant mysterious garden of Dulsina". In the dream, Don Quixote saw Cupid and Dulcina surrounded by fairies. Dulcina praised Don Quixote's "feat". The fairies, Cupid and Dulcina danced beautifully until Don Quixote woke up.

5. Act II Scene 3-Gypsy Camp

After waking up, Don Quixote tried to cover Katie and Basilio with gypsies, but Katie's father saw him and chased him with Ma Erkai. Don Quixote also pursued them in order to safeguard them.

6. Act III Scene 1-Tavern

Katie and Basilio came to a bar, and Espa arrived at the same time. Their enthusiastic dance set off a climax in the bar. Later, when Ma Erkai and Don Quixote came, Katie's father insisted on marrying Ma Erkai.

Basilio directed and staged a suicide farce. With the help of Don Quixote (who thought Basilio was dead) and everyone (who knew Basilio was not dead), Katie's father finally agreed to their marriage. Basilio woke up at once, and the pub was immersed in a sea of joy.

7. Act III Scene 2-Wedding

After Kitty and Basilio's famous duet, the whole play is over.

Behind the scenes production

The premiere version is four acts and eight scenes. Later, Petipa and Ming Kusi expanded the play into five acts for the St. Petersburg Royal Ballet (1 1), and premiered the adapted version at the Imperial Theatre in St. Petersburg on 187 1+0.

Today, most versions of the play originated from the version arranged by Alexander Gorschi for the Moscow Grand Theatre in 1900, which was also staged at the Malinschi Grand Theatre in St. Petersburg in 1902.

Don Quixote is regarded as the most festive classical ballet. While laughing, cursing and entertaining the audience, the protagonist still has enough space to show difficult skills. Among them, Don Quixote's dreamy scenes and duet are particularly famous.

The main line of ballet is different from the original novel: the ballet takes the love story between Kitty and Basilio as the main line, while Don Quixote and Sancho are basically walk-on.
