Su Shi's "Song of Water" (水调歌头). Mid-Autumn

Song. Su Shi (苏轼)

丙辰中秋,欢饮达旦,大醉,作此篇,兼怀子由。

When will the bright moon come?

I don't know what year it is in the heavenly palace.

I want to go home on the wind, but I'm afraid that the jeweled towers and jade buildings

won't be able to withstand the cold.

It's not like I'm on earth!

Turning to the Zhu Pavilion, the low ceiling, the light is sleepless.

There should be no hate, why do things always turn to the other side of the round?

People have their sorrows and joys, the moon has its own shade,

this matter is difficult to be complete.

But I wish people would stay long, and thousands of miles of **** Canyuan Juan.

Interpretation: (1) The high and lofty spirit, in "asking the sky with wine", goes up in the air.

The full moon shines down on the drunken, hazy Woody Ao lyricist. The moon palace is not an earthly place, how can you inquire about the moon in the year? The "Qionglou" is in the fairyland, and there is no such thing as the world's cool? Drunken thoughts are strange and ridiculous, in the dance in the shadow of the floating, not to mention a few Friesian crazy. Sleepless nights, after all, alone, loved ones separated from the annoyance, can only be asked by the full moon. The moon has no hate, and how to know the sorrow of the world? The sunshine and the roundness, since it is the normal way of heaven's fortune. Drunken thoughts are open and helpless, the sadness and joy of the separation, can be dissolved by self-relief and self-compassion. The most charming is of course the ending beat: the deep wishes, so that life is full of hope, the bright full moon, then not only shines "thousands of miles",

also illuminated this bold and handsome song of the ages!

(2) The first piece of the moon, both with a free thinking, high to the mixed, but also down-to-earth, since the amount of elegance and high-mindedness. The first four sentences ask the moon and ask the year, like Qu Yuan "Tianwen", starting with the strange. The Tang Dynasty called Li Bai the "Exiled Immortal", and Huang Tingjian called Su Shi and Li Bai the "Two Exiled Immortals", and Su Shi himself envisioned that he was a man in the moon in his past life, and thus thought of "returning to the world by the wind". But heaven and earth, fantasy and reality, out of the world and into the world, both attracted at the same time. In contrast, he is still based on reality, passionately in love with the human world, and feels that the earthly life with brothers and friends is warm and friendly. Dancing under the moon, the light and shadow of the realm of life is better than the moon and the cloud steps, cold and clear void of the heavenly palace. Though in the earthly and the chest is open, a piece of light. The next piece of nostalgia. Life is not without regrets, sadness and happiness is one of them. Su Shi brotherhood is very close. He and Su Zhe Xining four years (1071) Yingzhou respectively after six years have not seen. Su shi originally served as Hangzhou pass judge, because Su rut in Jinan in charge of the secretary, specially requesting the northern migration. To Mizhou or no chance to meet. "at arm's length days do not see each other, really with thousands of miles, life without parting, who knows the love of heavy" (Yingzhou, the first parting ZiYu), but Su Shi think, people have sadness and happiness with the moon has the same as the moon has the same roundness, the two are the natural common sense, must be sad. Finally, the reasoning to dispel feelings, from *** with the moon in the mutual solace, parting this life regret from the feelings of friendship and love to be compensated. Life does not seek a long gathering, two hearts together, the bright moon and ****, is not a beautiful realm. The lyrics of the upper part of the obsession with life, the lower part of the good life, showing Su Shi's love of life, the side of the sentiment of open-mindedness. The word in the realm of high purity, reasoning, deep flavor, and out of the dashing pen, a piece of God line, without carving, volume and Shu freely, so nine hundred years of recitation never fails. "Since Dong Po's Song of Water Tune came out, the rest of the lyrics have been abolished" (Hu Zai, "Campsis Fishing Hidden Industry Words", Volume 39). Wu Qian, "Frosty Day Dawn Corner": "And singing Dongpo's Song of Water, under the clear dew, full of snow." The Water Margin" 30th written August 15 "can sing a mid-autumn to the moon to the scene of the song," sung by this "a bachelor of Dong Po mid-autumn "Water Tunes Song." It can be seen that the Song and Yuan when the singing flourished.

(3) This song was written in the year of Bichen, that is, the Mid-Autumn Festival in the ninth year of Emperor Xining of Emperor Shenzong of the Song Dynasty (1076), which was also the third year of Su Shi's appointment to Mizhou. The lyric is divided into an upper section and a lower section, in which there is the full moon of the Mid-Autumn Festival, the wine in the cup, but also the deep thoughts, despondency, confusion, fantasies, lovesickness, and the final penetration of the lyricist. Su Shi wrote in the preface of the lyrics: "In the mid-autumn of the year bingchen, I was drunk, so I wrote this piece and remembered Ziyu." Close your eyes and place yourself in such a scene, the ambiguous aroma left in the glass, and the flow of alcohol in the blood, together, carefully but violently touching the sensitive nerves of the drinker at this time. There is no experience of drunkenness, but I have seen some, heard some, and wondered what kind of feeling the person in that moment would have. Under the moon, drunken people may not be able to recognize, whether it is their own vision blurred, or the outline of things blurred. And I think that in the blur that covers it, there must be some kind of existential certainty dominating one's will.

"When is the bright moon? Put wine and ask the blue sky." Time is constantly moving forward, the times are constantly changing, but the way people look for self-catharsis does not seem to change easily. I remember seeing many times on TV scenes of people getting drunk, exposing their desire to ask questions in their own shaky visual space, but seemingly not attempting to find any desired answers. Mid-autumn night always brings a strong mood of lovesickness, and although I myself have suffered that kind of despondency in lovesickness, I can't say that this night is any different from the remaining 364 nights of the year. Perhaps people have been accustomed to take it as an excuse to quietly admit their negative side. Su Shi gazes at the moon in the deep blue sky, recalls the taste of the wine that slips down his throat, and poses a question that lets us see the confusion and despondency of his state of mind. This kind of questioning reminds me of what Li Bai wrote in "Asking for the Moon over Wine": "When will the moon come in the blue sky? I want to stop my cup and ask." I used to think that the sky because of its vast and boundless and tolerant enough to accommodate every wandering person's questions about the universe and about life, but found that people's pious waiting is ridiculed by the sky's emptiness, the answer is buried too deep, people, still empty and do not know what to do. But perhaps, to the sky to set questions is a form of ancient favorites, or a stubborn performance. "I don't know what year it is in the heavenly palace?" This line in the answer to the previous question at the same time set up a new question, is Su Shi deeper thinking. The two sentences associated with the question of the poet's rich fantasies show a natural and reasonable.

"I want to go home on the wind, but I am afraid that the agate tower is too high to be cold." This line is written about the poet's fantasies induced from the reality. I think Su Shi is a person who can easily get lost in nature, as in his "Former Red Cliff Fugue", the poet inadvertently blends himself with the things around him. I think this may be due to Su Shi's romantic character and ethereal feelings, or perhaps because nature, an objective entity, does not bring any more confinement and oppression to the human mind and spirit, and thus more or less dilutes the pain of people's subjective emotions. At that time Su Shi was experiencing political disillusionment - because of the opposition to Wang Anshi's change of law and was transferred to a local official, the future of the uncertainty, coupled with his younger brother, ZiYu each separated from each other, the inner depression as a strong medicine, so that he produced a "ride the wind back to" fluttering The idea of "returning by the wind" was born in him. This is also a reflection of Su Shi's idea of "leaving the world". In the last line of the first section, "Dancing and making clear shadows, why is it like being on earth? The friction between reality and fantasy reflects Su Shi's complex mindset between "leaving the world" and "entering the world". He once again raised the question that neither heaven nor himself could answer, and his inner desolate helplessness and loneliness were naked in the "bright moon" accompanied by the "blue sky", and were released by the fantasy in his mind and the reality that really existed.

I think, when the mind is complicated or confused, relying on a certain kind of pure emotion may be a way to get redemption. Su Shi's longing for his younger brother Ziyu was not only a product of the specific circumstances of the time, but also a way for him to find self-relief. In the second section of the poem, the poet uses a beautiful art form to express the natural flow of his personal emotions, and also shows us that life's frustrations and grievances are thus transformed into philosophical openness.

"Turning to the vermilion pavilion, lowering the beautiful house, shining without sleep." At this point, the moon is given signs of life, and the flow of moonlight from the red pavilion to the carved windows and doors corresponds to Su Shi's fluctuating thoughts. The moonlight finally moves down to the sleepless person who has had a long night. Such an image reminds me of Li Bai's "Moonlight", which I used to memorize when I was a child: "The light of the moon before the bed is suspected to be frost on the ground. Raising my head to look at the bright moon, lowering my head to think of my hometown." It seems that the bitterness of longing will always appear deeper and stronger under the moonlight. "There should not be hate, what is long to the other time round?" People, will be because of the dark night in the moonlight reflection under the shadow of the company, and in the reluctance to see more clearly the lonely whole body. Su Shi encounters the moon in its fullest and brightest aspect when the love of love is at its strongest, while the moon, which releases its heat silently and slowly, is simple and unaware of it. The poet used the tone of cross-examination to question the moon: the moon originally is not hateful, why do you want to show the appearance of the crystal disk in the time of people's parting, and how much to add to people's "full moon and people are not yet full" of the frustration and hatred. This is a deliberate mockery? Or alternatively, sympathy?

"People have sadness and happiness, the moon has its shade and roundness, this matter is difficult to complete." This is both the answer to the previous sentence, but also the poet's rethinking of life: since the "ancient", the world has not been perfect - there will be joy in the life of a person will be sad and bitter, there will be reunions will be parted, just like the moon will meet the cloudy, sunny, round, and lack of. Some people say that this is Su Shi's philosophical contemplation of life, he realized the mutilation and two-sidedness of things. Su Shi turned his feelings into rationality, turned bleakness into lucidity, and found a path of self-relief in his interpretation of life. However, I would like to ask myself: when people can't think of any other way out, do they often look for analogies with things that seem to be "connected" to them, so as to get a little bit of comfort? The last sentence of the whole article Su Shi wrote: "But I wish people to be long, thousands of miles *** Canyuan Juan." Xie Zhuang of the Southern Song Dynasty also wrote in his poem "Moon Fugue", "The beauty of the world is a section of sound and dust, separated by a thousand miles and a **** bright moon." Since there is no such thing as perfection in the world, there is no need to be sad and mournful all the time about parting with your loved ones, but only to always be in good health and to be able to enjoy the bright moon thousands of miles **** away. Needless to say, the surface of the word confirms the poet's freedom and open-mindedness - the poet seems to be their own comprehension of the idea of life and then sublimated together, all the previous doubts into a good wish, full of confusion, bitterness, frustration, hatred and misery of the emotions were eventually replaced by a positive and optimistic state of mind. But I would like to ask Su Shi at that time, is not entangled in the heart of the doubt is really so easy to dissipate? That "pessimism" is associated with all the loneliness, confusion, despair, helplessness and how much value exists in the abyss of a person's invisible heart?

It is remembered that Hu Zai in the Southern Song Dynasty said in "Campsis Fishing Hidden Words": "Mid-Autumn Festival words, since Dong Po "Song of Water", the rest of the words are abolished." I think people like the tendency of things to develop radically, and I think this is a pattern that Su Shi chose in writing this lyric. The words are full of rich imagery, rich depictions, rich emotions, and rich twists and turns of thought - changes that open one's eyes. It's just a shame to feel that these leaps revealed in the words appear so suddenly and come so quickly that they seem to go beyond what can be measured in time. So some believe that there is a deception hidden in the words, and deplore the poet's desperate attempts to cover up and disguise his hurt. However, there are also some who laugh at themselves for thinking that perhaps the transition between happiness and sadness can be a matter of a split second, or perhaps there is no clear division between happiness and sadness at all. Su Shi is also just trying to show the transition of his inner thoughts and feelings
