Square dance in Yangzhou through the ages

During the Southern Dynasties, several people talked about their life ideals together.

A man said, "I want to be the prefect of Yangzhou." One man said, "I want to have a lot of money." A man said, "I want to ride a crane to become an immortal." The last man said, "I'm rich, riding a crane to the state." Obviously, I want to be an official, make a fortune and finally become an immortal.

It can be seen that Yangzhou, 1000 years ago, is already a place people yearn for.

Yangzhou has been a prosperous place since Qin and Han Dynasties and Sui and Tang Dynasties. If Chang 'an, the capital of China at that time, was equivalent to Beijing now; Then Yangzhou at that time was equivalent to Shanghai now. This is because Yangzhou is located at the intersection of the Yangtze River and the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, and it thrives on water. The endless Yangtze River and the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal excavated in the Sui Dynasty have nurtured Yangzhou's Millennium prosperity.

To this end, Li Bai, a great poet in the Tang Dynasty, wrote the eternal swan song "An old friend stays in the Yellow Crane Tower in the west, and fireworks go down to Yangzhou in March". At that time, Du Mu of the Tang Dynasty uttered a sigh, "I dreamed of Yangzhou for ten years, and I finally got the reputation of a brothel". Jiang Kui, a writer in the Southern Song Dynasty, wrote a wonderful masterpiece "Huai Zuo, Zhu Jiachu".

In the middle of the Tang Dynasty, the famous "An Shi Rebellion" broke out. The rebels controlled the north, and only the Jiangnan area with Yangzhou as the center was still in the hands of the Tang Dynasty. If Yangzhou had fallen into the hands of the rebels, the Tang Dynasty would have ended long ago. Fortunately, Zhang Xun, the deputy envoy of Henan Province, led the soldiers and civilians to hold on to Suiyang (now south of Shangqiu, Henan Province) 10 month, so that the rebels could not go south and conquer Yangzhou and other places.

In the end, the Jiangnan area with Yangzhou as the center provided the troops of the Tang Dynasty with necessary grain, grass and military forces, maintained the normal operation of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, and enabled the emperor of the Tang Dynasty to have enough confidence to confront the rebels, and survived for nearly 200 years under the separatist regime of the buffer region after the "An Shi Rebellion".

After thousands of years of wind and rain, Yangzhou has gone through many hardships. In particular, the "Yangzhou Eight Days" destroyed the city when the Qing Dynasty entered the customs. Fortunately, Yangzhou people withstood these hardships and continued to build their own homes.

However, Yangzhou is closely related to the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal. In the late Qing dynasty, the financial resources of the Qing dynasty were tight, and the dredging of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal was difficult, which led to the siltation of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, and many sections were no longer navigable and gradually abandoned. People have found a more convenient, economical and efficient mode of transportation than the canal: sea transportation. In this way, with the abandonment of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, Yangzhou gradually declined, from a transportation hub that used to travel from south to north to an ordinary city on the Yangtze River.

Yangzhou is now a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Jiangsu Province, located in the middle of Jiangsu Province, with an area of 6,634 square kilometers and a permanent population of 453 1 10,000 in 20 18 years. It has jurisdiction over three municipal districts of Hanjiang District, Guangling District and Jiangdu District, Baoying 1 county, Gaoyou and Yizheng.

In 1970s and 1980s, Yangzhou initiated various economic reforms with rural reform as the guide. From 1992 to 200 1, various reforms broke through in an all-round way, opening to the outside world developed in depth, and Yangzhou's economy achieved rapid development. From 2002 to 20 1 1, it was a leap-forward development stage, various reforms were comprehensively and deeply promoted, and Yangzhou's economy and society achieved leap-forward development.
