Preface
Four men were seated round a round table in the large study of the mansion at No. 1 Brothers High Terrace Street. Over the past few years, the table under the chandelier had been furnished with a number of curious displays for Dr. Phil to examine. The dancing clockwork toy, for instance, whose whirling dance of the tin gadget had furnished the clue to the solution of the "Wetherby Farm" affair; or the six green coins which had hanged Bolton of Regent Street. But the displays on the table tonight, where they are collected, are rarely out of place. But in the famous Arabian Nights murders, they play the role of exhibits in the courtroom. There were six of them, the first a cookbook and the last two pairs of fake beards.
The lighting on the table was intense, with a spotlight effect. There was no other source of light in the room, except for the fire that had been lit for an all-night party, should one be needed. Dr. Gideon Fell took his place in the largest chair, smiling as he eyed the small coffee table filled with cigars and spirits beside the large table. After four months in the south of France, the Doctor's spirits were, to say the least, very high, and his health was as good as it could be. It may be remembered that after solving the "Girard Poisoning Case" involving two English girls, which was an exhausting affair, he left for Cannes. After that, he wandered around the C?te d'Azur, partly treating his asthma, but mainly aiming to regain his physical and mental health in natural relaxation. Under the chandelier it looked as if his face was now rosier than ever. And behind the spectacles tied with wide black ribbons his little eyes sparkled; and a giggle made several layers of meaty jaws angry and jiggled the bucket-waist along with them. Like the ghost who delivers Christmas presents ......
