Badanjilin Park is dominated by high sandy mountains, singing sands, desert lakes and typical wind-eroded landforms, including four scenic spots of Badanjilin Desert, rock paintings of Mandrake Mountain, Eri Bugai Canyon and Haisen Chulu wind-eroded landforms. Tengger Park is characterized by diverse sand dunes, desert lakes and canyon landscapes, including three scenic spots of Moon Lake, Tong Lake and Oolun Prague Canyon. The Juyan Park is dominated by Gobi landscape, poplar forests and ancient city ruins, including three scenic spots of Juyan Sea, poplar forests and cultural remains of the Black City.
The park is rich in geological relics, beautiful and marvelous natural landscapes, and unique and long history of humanities, which is a natural museum for studying the formation, development and evolution of deserts, and moreover, it is a textbook for the protection of human ecological environment.
Alashan Desert Geopark in the Ministry of Land and Resources, the People's Government of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, the autonomous region of Land and Resources Department, Alxa League Party Committee, the Executive Yuan, Alxa League Bureau of Land and Resources under the correct leadership and strong support, in November 28, 2004, promoted to the autonomous region of the level of geoparks; September 19, 2005, promoted to the National Geopark, September 19, 2007, the success of the monument unveiled the opening of the park; 2007, December 12, the opening of the park. On December 22, 2007, the executive meeting of Alxa League Administration decided to carry out the work of declaring Alxa Desert World Geopark; in October 2008, at the fifth batch of World Geopark Recommendation Review held in Beijing, Alxa Desert National Geopark won the qualification of the only promotion of the World Geopark of the current year, and formally accepted the field inspection of the domestic expert group in November 2008; in June 2009, the National Geopark was promoted to a national geopark. On June 23, 2009, Alxa Desert National Geopark was formally accepted the field inspection by the expert group of UNESCO, and on August 22, 2009, Alxa Desert National Geopark was recognized as a world geopark in the meeting of the Executive Board of UNESCO World Geoparks Network, and was announced at the opening ceremony of the "Third International Geoparks Development Symposium" on August 23, 2009. So far, the Inner Mongolia Alashan Desert National Geopark has become China's 22nd world geopark, and also the world's only desert world geopark.
For a geopark, its rich geological landforms should have high academic research value, and at the same time, these landforms should also be good quality geological tourism resources.
