Wei Wei was born on September 28, 1963 in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, and showed a talent for singing and dancing from the age of 4. She learned the art of singing from a teacher at the age of 6, and at the age of 8, she began her training in dance performances and became active on the stage.

In 1985, she took part in the National Singing Competition held in Wuhan and was selected as one of the 12 stars of the Shenzhou singing world. 1986, she took part in the CCTV's Youth Singing Competition and won the second place in the popular group, and then, as China's first nationally-selected delegate, she took part in the 24th Sopot International Festival of Music in Poland, and won the Special Award for Singing and the Most Photogenic Miss Award.
