Chongqing Xiushan County is under the direct administration of Chongqing Municipality.
On November 7, 1949, Xiushan was liberated. On November 20, the Xiushan County People's Government was established, under the jurisdiction of the Fuling Commissioner's Office of the Southwest District Sichuan East Administrative Office.
On January 23, 1950, the three counties of Xiushan, Youyang, and Qianjiang under the jurisdiction of Fuling Prefecture established the "Administrative Supervisory Commissioner's Office of Youyang District in Eastern Sichuan" to govern Youyang County. Xiushan County is under the jurisdiction of Youyang Special Office.
On September 5, 1952, the Office of the Administrative Inspector of Youyang District was abolished and merged into the Office of the Administrative Inspector of Fuling District. Xiushan County also changed its jurisdiction.
On April 4, 1983, "Xiushan Tujia and Miao Autonomous County" was established. The original administrative area remained unchanged. The autonomous county people's government is located in Zhonghe Town and is still under the Fuling District Commissioner's Office.
In May 1988, with the approval of the State Council, the Qianjiang Prefecture was placed, and Xiushan Tujia and Miao Autonomous County was renamed to the Qianjiang Prefecture. In March 1997, Xiushan Tujia and Miao Autonomous County was transferred to Chongqing City along with Qianjiang Prefecture.
In 2001, after the Qianjiang Development Zone was withdrawn, Xiushan Tujia and Miao Autonomous County came under the direct administration of Chongqing Municipality.
