She chose the third path despite her parents' opposition.

In the 1850s, Britain, France, Turkey, and Russia were engaged in the Crimean War, which saw a 50 percent mortality rate among British field fighters. Nightingale took the initiative and volunteered to serve as a field nurse. She arrived at the front with 38 nurses to serve in the field hospitals. The mortality rate of the sick and wounded dropped to 2.2% in only about six months. Every night, she made her rounds with an oil lamp in her hand, and the sick and wounded affectionately called her Ms. Lamplighter. At the end of the war, Nightingale returned to the United Kingdom and was revered as a national hero.

"White Angel" text original

To the hospital to see the doctor, in addition to contact with the doctor, but also contact with the nurse, especially when hospitalized, contact with the nurse more. Doctors to diagnose the patient's condition, to determine the treatment program, the nurse in accordance with the doctor's instructions to the patient temperature, injections, medication, dress wounds, at any time to care for the patient. Nurses with their unique love, smile and scientific nursing methods to help patients recover, known as the "white angel". However, you may not know, in the past, there is no specialized nurses in the hospital this occupation, about one hundred and fifty years ago to set up a modern nursing profession, the training of professional nurses, the founder of this profession is Florence Nightingale.

Nightingale was an Englishwoman, born in Italy in 1820. She came from a well-to-do family and was well educated. Her parents wanted her to develop her literary and musical talents and to become a member of the upper class, but she had little interest in this. She wrote in her diary, "There are three paths before me: one is to become a literary scholar, the second is to marry and become a housewife, and the third is to become a nurse." She chose the third path despite her parents' objections.

The Crimean War broke out, and at the beginning, the conditions of medical care for the British army were very poor, and the mortality rate of the wounded was as high as forty-two percent. The newspapers disclosed these facts and the country was in uproar. Florence Nightingale took the initiative to apply for the care of the wounded, leading thirty-eight nurses to the front line, and pioneering the cause of modern field nursing on her own. It was a daunting challenge for a woman. Public opinion in Britain was always against the presence of female nurses in hospitals, especially in field hospitals. On one occasion, Florence Nightingale was comforting a wounded man as she changed his medicine, and the man was moved to tears. At that moment, a major officer came in and called Nightingale out, saying to her with a look of disdain on his face:

"Noble lady, you'd better go back to London! You are nursing these wounded men, and they will not be able to go to war."

"Why?" Nightingale asked in disbelief.

"Think about it, can a man who can't move without shedding tears charge into battle? You and your companions have spoiled them!"

"No!" Nightingale said, looking the Major straight in the eye, "In my eyes they are men, brothers, and when they are wounded they deserve care and comfort."

The Major was about to say something else when Nightingale said with a serious expression, "I'm sorry, Mr. Major, I don't have time to discuss this with you right now." After saying that, she turned around and walked towards the ward.

Nightingale set up a nurse patrol system, every night she always carry a wind lamp to patrol the ward, a night patrol distance of seven kilometers. Whenever she walked through the streets with a wind lamp in her hand, wherever she went, the soldiers kissed her figure to show their high respect, and affectionately called her "goddess of the lamp".

With Nightingale's efforts, conditions in the wards improved dramatically, and in six months, the mortality rate of the wounded dropped to two percent. Many of the wounded recovered and did not forget Florence Nightingale, whose performance in the hospital was compiled into poems and printed in pamphlets. Fifty years later, the soldiers were still reciting them together when they were reunited. With Nightingale contemporaries of the revolutionary mentor Marx, Nightingale's bravery and dedication is very touched and admiration, wrote two enthusiastic newsletter, respectively, published in Germany's Neue Oder and the United States of America's New York Tribune.

The miracle of Nightingale shook the country, changing the views of the British public on the nurses, nursing has been emphasized by the community. For a time, Nightingale also became a legendary figure in Britain. She returned home after the war and was honored as a national hero. However, she was modest, courteous and self-restrained, and politely declined the official material treatment and all the hospitality provided for her, and immediately plunged into the intense work of founding a nursing school. 1860, she used a large sum of money donated by all walks of life in recognition of her meritorious service to create the Nightingale Nursing Training School, which was the world's first formal nursing school. Prior to this, nursing was seen as a lower* profession. Nurses were crude, old women who had no professional nursing knowledge, lacked compassion, were ignorant, dirty, boorish, had no rules and regulations, and did not perform even the most basic "scrubber's" job. The walls and floors of the wards were covered in blood and stains, and the wards stank to high heaven. In response to this situation, the Nightingale School of Nursing established a strict system of curriculum, selection of students, internship and performance evaluation.

In the past 30 years, the school has trained more than 1,000 students, and the best graduates have been hired by hospitals in Europe, the United States, and Asia to run nursing schools. Nightingale pioneered the great cause of the modern nursing profession, which is an unprecedented contribution to the whole of mankind. With the massive increase in trained nurses, nursing has developed rapidly, and the level of medical care around the world has been greatly improved.

After 1857, Nightingale was in poor health, but she often worked more than twenty hours a day. Due to overwork, she lost her eyesight in 1901. But she still remembered the nursing profession, but also continue to meet with visitors, publicize her ideas and advocacy. 1910, Nightingale in the sleep of the swift death. In 1910, Nightingale died in her sleep. In accordance with her will, no state funeral was held in England. But the world in order to remember this modern nursing pioneer and founder of modern nursing education, her birthday as International Nurses Day, and the establishment of the Nightingale Award, rewarding those who have made outstanding contributions to nursing.
