It was a surgery that required a lot of goodwill and luck. 2, 4 kidneys, 2 pairs were taken out of a couple's remains and transported 250 kilometers away. After a special goodbye, what had belonged to two people had a chance to work again in the bodies of 10 others.
This is a couple of miners, after passing away in a car accident after resuscitation, their daughter made this not easy decision for them. "Hopefully, what the parents couldn't do in time, someone else will do for them. At least those two pairs, can take them to see more scenery."
In China, there is a huge gap between supply and demand, and according to the China Development Report (2022 ), about 4 out of every million people will donate, with many patients passing away while waiting.
The hard-working, enthusiastic, and even ordinary Anhui couple became the first domestic couple to donate at the same time. The young deliveryman and architect got theirs, and the 45-year-old truck driver waited for a healthy kidney after battling the disease for two years.
According to the "double-blind principle" of donation, they will not know the names of the couple, and there is no way to thank them.
When winter comes, like more than 1,200 donors in Anhui Province, the couple's names will be carved into a monument forest. As a rule, the families of the deceased and the recipients will meet here next year at the spring equinox.
Here they observe a moment of silence, send flowers and read poetry, but perhaps remain unaware of each other.

The enthusiastic couple
It was a calm morning.
Liu Zhiqiang went downstairs to run, people in middle age, slightly fat, he went downstairs every day to run two laps. The morning breeze is cool, the roadside of the moon season is in full bloom, he stopped, took a picture and sent it to his daughters.
His wife Lu Li is still busy in the kitchen. Pancakes, porridge, soybean milk, she has to prepare everything before the daughters wake up. After the daughters went to work, Liu Zhiqiang is also ready to go to work in the mine, Lu Li wanted to go to buy something, the two of them went out the door together.
The electric car from the familiar greenway through. Ten minutes later, at an intersection, a truck suddenly broke out.
When the accident occurred, the second daughter Liu Mengjia at work. 11 am on June 3, "Mom" call, she thought she was going to read again to let her eat well. More than an hour ago, Lu Li just sent the meal to the daughter's company, but also sent a WeChat, "If the food is cold, you reheat it."
But what came from the other end was an unfamiliar voice. "Your parents had a car accident, come quickly!" Liu Mengjia as if struck by a bolt of lightning, trembling, immediately rushed to the China Coal Mining Construction General Hospital in Cebu. The doctor told her to call her parents, and Liu Mengjia said with a sobbing voice, "This is my parent."
The doctor gave notice. Liu and Lu Li lie in adjacent beds, relying on a ventilator to maintain life. There is only 10 minutes of visiting time per day. In those 10 minutes, Liu Mengjia will help his parents legs, wipe their faces, shake hands and talk.
Parents of ten days, she ran to ask the doctor every day to save the situation, and again and again disappointed. The doctor was sometimes tired of being asked, "It's the same as yesterday."
Another week passed, and the situation did not improve, and even got worse. Mr. and Mrs. Liu Zhiqiang are in an irreversible state of depth, doctors hope that the family can accept the fact that the patient can not wake up, and at the same time put forward another "living" possibility - donation.
Liu Mengjia hesitated for a long time, she tried to think, "If they knew, maybe they would also support this decision."
The parents have a good heart. The road encountered riding a tricycle uphill old man, always can not help but go forward to push a hand; mine at the old colleagues for decades, need to come to Liu Zhiqiang give a hand; neighbors and Lu Li greeted with a smile, they like to about to dance together in the square dance, Lu Li tall, stayed in the long curly hair, dance to imitation will be glowing.
It was not an easy decision. Medical coordinator Li Chunwei understands this feeling, donation to seek the consent of the immediate family, even if one person does not agree, will terminate the donation. Past experience has taught him that this inevitably runs counter to certain traditional concepts, such as "the dead are the most important" and "leave in one piece".

Two and ten
Parents doted on the youngest daughter first objected. Two days before the crash, her parents had just given her a birthday. Lu Li held up her cell phone and recorded the moment her daughter blew out the candles. Lychee bought that day has not been eaten, frozen in the freezer.
Liu Mengjia understand her sister's reluctance, the accident came too quickly, leaving too many regrets.
After decades of miners Liu Zhiqiang will soon be retired, but the family plans to "family tourism" has not been able to come to life; the festival is coming, the three sisters are still discussing which style of clothes to buy for their dads; Liu Mengjia is looking forward to the not-too-distant future, will hold her hand into the wedding chapel! ......
"Things that were not done before, let others do it for them." Liu Mengjia finally convinced her family, "At least those two pairs, can take them to see more scenery."
On the morning of June 15, Liu Mengjia and his family signed the confirmation of donation.
In the presence of Cebu, Liu and Lu Li's ventilators were removed and they were declared brain dead. Their bodies were covered with blue cloths, and the doctors, and coordinators gathered around, heads bowed, bowed once, bowed twice, bowed three times, "a moment of silence to the great donors."
It was raining heavily outside the window, and the family once had the opportunity to go into the ward together, and Mr. and Mrs. Liu Zhiqiang said their final goodbyes.
The couple walked hand in hand for more than 30 years, has been peaceful. May 20 this year, Liu Zhiqiang sent Lu Li "520 red envelope", told her "I love you, like a mouse loves rice." Lu Li happy all day, night pulling daughter "show off". Even in the last moments of life, they are also together.
After their parents left, the three sisters changed their WeChat avatars. A black photo, click in to look closely, you can see the stars. They believe that "people will turn into stars after death", and when they miss it, they can see it when they look up.
Because of the death of the car accident donor, Li Chunwei has seen a lot, "but the husband and wife at the same time, this is the first case in China."
Two hours later, the acquisition of the operation was completed. 2, 4 kidneys, 2 pairs were removed one after another, loaded into a specific storage apparatus, and sent urgently from Cebu to the city of Hefei. There, the team, the operating room, section, blood transfusion specialists tightly prepared.
Unsurprisingly, these will soon be in the warm bodies of 10 patients, running again. 6 patients with liver and kidney failure had their lives saved, and 4 patients with eye problems were able to see again.

Lost and found eyes
On the rainy day of Mr. and Mrs. Liu Zhiqiang's death, Liang Jiaxin was lying in the Hefei Prudential Ophthalmology Hospital, where she waited for is coming from 250 kilometers away.
A week earlier, the 35-year-old had suffered a bacterial infection that led to a perforation that could have permanently blinded her and even injured the nerves in her brain. She's not used to the disrupted equilibrium. The pain spreads from the eye socket to the face and head, the world in the left eye slowly turns from "a layer of fog" to "a piece of paper", the eye will unconsciously drip tears, and when walking accidentally step on the air.
Ophthalmologist Dr. Qu Zhiguo proposed that she replace, but to get this requires rare luck. Without the right one, the doctor was at his wits' end.
Qu Zhiguo, who has been in charge of medical donation since 2008, has a cabinet in his office full of volunteer donation forms. Happily, the donation figures have risen from an initial two cases a year to hundreds a year now, but the waiting list is still far longer.
Karen Leung was lucky, after all, another patient who accepted the donation had been waiting for five years.
This is a nearly six-foot-eight lad with skin, working in the construction industry, where he needs to put his eyes in front of an instrument to measure the precise orientation of the building. 5 years ago, Sun Sicheng's had a problem, and the doctor recommended a transplant, registering the information and then waiting. By June this year, he could not even see 5 meters away.
Lying on the operating bed, Sun Sicheng a burst of sweat, hands also nervous to, staring at the head of the shadowless lamp motionless. He recounted the experience with some embarrassment, this is his first time to do surgery, the next bed of the aunt "ridicule" him: "such a big boy, what is afraid of?"
The operation was a success, and after recovery, Sun Sicheng sometimes wondered who the person who donated to him was, and whether he was a man or a woman, and how old he was. One day, he saw the news of a couple of deceased donors, that time and his own surgery time is about the same, he guessed that his "benefactor" may be them.
According to the "double-blind principle" of donation, the donor and the recipient cannot know each other's information. But Sun Sicheng's still want to talk to the doctor to inquire about, learned that Liu Zhiqiang age and his own, and three daughters. He was worried that the children would suffer, "If their family has difficulties, you can always call me, we can donate some money."
The doctor shook his head. The father and son added, "Then wish them health and peace."
The fog cleared from Leung Ka Yan's eyes as she removed the gauze. Her son stared curiously at her left eye to see what was different. "Mom, why did people give you their eyes?"
How does one explain donation to a 6-year-old? "They passed away but want to help more people." The son asks again, "So that's dead?" "Yes, their eyes are alive in their mommy."

"One in a million"
The kidney transplant process is far tougher.
Liu Dayong and his kidney have been struggling to hold on for two years. Mr. and Mrs. Liu Zhiqiang's donated kidneys were sent to one of the hospitals attached to Anhui Medical University ("First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University"), where Liu Dayong became one of the four selected recipients.
He drove a truck for more than ten years, running all over the country, 24 hours a day basically in the car, hungry to go to the service area to eat noodles. He said and the northeast of the scenery is very beautiful, but driving is too tired.
Two years ago, Liu Dayong was diagnosed with advanced stage. The first few headaches, he thought it was tired, did not care. A month later, he suddenly found the eyes, see things a little blurred. Liu Dayong scared blind, eyes but the driver's life, he was worried about the job is not guaranteed, lost to support a family of crafts.
After the diagnosis, Liu Dayong often feel breathing difficulties, sleep at night at least two pillows. Appetite is very poor, the height of one meter seven he lost from 138 pounds to 104 pounds, the face is yellow, black spots climbed all over the body.
Drinking water has also become a very dangerous thing. A few more sips will feel heart failure and weakness.
Tubing and dialysis are commonplace. A tube is inserted from the thigh, and the blood in the body is led to the machine, filtered and drained, and then sent back to the body. With the aggravation of the disease, dialysis from once a week, into two, three times a week. This is often difficult to bear, each dialysis finished, Liu Dayong move do not want to move, "the whole person especially soft."
The car is completely open. Liu Dayong entrusted the sale of the truck, the family's daughter in college, the son is reading high school, food, clothing and supplies are to spend money. His wife opened a late-night stall in his hometown of Shouxian, selling locally famous Huainan beef soup. The couple is often busy from evening to the early morning. Liu Dayong helped wash the dishes, dishes, and when he was in good shape, he could help with fried rice and fried noodles, "Everyone says my fried noodles are delicious."
The wait is long. The transplant process for kidneys and is complex and extremely rare. As of the end of 2022, 47,382 people were still waiting for kidney transplants across the country, according to the China Development Report. Donations need to be allocated through China's Human Allocation and ****enjoyment computer system, and selected patients also need to be matched successfully.
From January 1, 2022, China completely stopped using criminals as donors . So far, voluntary donation after the death of citizens will be the only channel to use. According to data released by the China Human Donation Management Center, there are about 300,000 patients in urgent need each year in China, but only 10,000 cases of surgery in 2022, there is a huge gap between the number of donations and the number of patients in need.
As of August 27, 2022, China has achieved 35,661 cases of donation and 106,054 donations. The rate of donations per million population increased from 2.01 in 2022 to 4.16 in 2022, but is still at a low level.
In the evening of June 15, a late-night snack stand had just opened. Spatulas flying between, ringing, a look at the doctor called, Liu Dayong wife "happy to die".
"There, do you want to change?" The doctor on the other end asked. "Change, sure change ah, we waited more than two years!"
The late-night snack stand, which was open until 2am, closed at 11pm. The next day, the daybreak, the brother drove them to Hefei. Hospital hall, more than a dozen patients like Liu Dayong waiting in line to draw blood matching, there will eventually be four people to accept the donation of Mr. and Mrs. Liu Zhiqiang.
From 47,382 people to the final four, Liu Dayong lucky to be the "one in a million".
"At that time, both wanted to match successfully, but also very afraid." The doctor said the success rate of the operation in about 60%, Liu Dayong behind his wife, mixed feelings. The doctor joked, "Did someone force you to come? Why are you hiding behind?" He shook his head awkwardly.
Liu Dayong became the lucky 1/4. After the success of the mating according to the row, Liu Dayong was one of the people who did the surgery, handed over the blue hospital gown, let him go to the bathroom to change, because of the fear, he dawdled for ten minutes before the hospital gown to change. When he came out, other patients have long been there, he became the last person to do surgery.
"I want to drink water." This is Liu Dayong woke up after surgery of. For a patient, water is an extreme luxury, sometimes thirsty, but also can only drink a small mouth moisturizing throat.
End to a cup of water, Liu Dayong with a straw two mouth, "that is the feeling."

"Life would have had no name"
Two weeks after the operation, Liu Dayong returned home. Discharged from the hospital for half a month, he weighed more than ten pounds and his face up.
He went from being a helper at the late-night snack stand to a mainstay. Sometimes, he would think of the people who donated their kidneys to him, "are Anhui people, will they also like to eat Huainan beef soup?" He decided to cherish the kidney. Driving a truck and doing catering are too hard, Liu Dayong wants to find another job, "earning money is secondary, health one."
Next June, Liu Dayong will return to the First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University with three other "kidney friends" to celebrate their birthdays and thank the medical staff for their efforts. The hospital has a tradition of celebrating """ for patients who have had transplants on the same day by sending them cakes and greeting cards.
"We won't forget the donors, and we hope the recipients will cherish their hard-won health even more." Yang Qiaolan, head of the nephrology department, has set up several "kidney friend groups" to guide transplant patients in their medication and rehabilitation, and will also make regular visits to them.
Afterward, most patients have a chance to start their lives over. Of the 10 patients who received a transplant from Mr. and Mrs. Liu, eight gradually recovered. But one eye patient had a poor recovery after the transplant and had no choice but to have a second transplant, and another liver patient passed away from an infection after surgery.
Li Chunwei, the donor, still travels from hospital to hospital every day, looking for potential donors. "There is still a big gap in donations, and the situation of our work is still very serious."
Li Chunwei once met a failing patient in his 40s who hadn't waited for a suitable transplant until he died. When he was seriously ill, he said to his wife, "If I can't make it one day, let's see if we can donate my kidney."
In March of this year, that patient passed away from liver failure. His wife dialed Li Chunwei's, hoping to donate her husband's. "As the patient's family, we know how hard it is to wait for the right one, and it's enough if we can help others." In the end, the deceased's kidney saved two patients, and his wife and daughter signed a voluntary donation agreement.
In every holiday, Li Chunwei will go to sympathize with the families of donors like Liu Zhiqiang, he hoped that his presence, he can tell them, "We have not forgotten, their loved ones to make contributions."
After cremation, Liu Zhiqiang's ashes were brought back home to Fuyang. The teenager, who left home at 17, returned to his homeland with his wife at 51.
But his and Lu Li's names will remain forever in the Dashushan Martyrs' Cultural Mausoleum in Hefei. There is a memorial forest of body donors, two pieces of ochre marble standing opposite each other, hollowed out the image of a man and a woman, the center of the glass printed red, written "Anhui Province, body donors".
The granite monument opens like the pages of a book, and the names of more than 1,200 donors are engraved on it. The year comes first, the name comes second, and the further back the year, the longer the name of the donor.
Now, the stone monument has been erected to the 9th, wait until the end of the year, Liu Zhiqiang and Lu Li's name will also be engraved on it.
On the spring equinox, the families of the deceased and the recipients of donations meet here. They observe a moment of silence, send flowers, and read poems here.
Under the leadership of the medical staff, Zhou Guoping's prose "Life Has No Name" was read again and again:
When a life so strange that it does not even know its name,
finds your life from afar, but so close,
through the worldly utilitarianism,
sends out an unrequited echo of your life,
this is not a life of life, but a life that is not a life that is not a life.
Is this not a touching encounter in life?
