Small Town Story is the theme song sung by Teresa Teng for the movie Small Town Story, with lyrics by Zhuang Nu and music composed by Weng Ching-Xi, and is included in Teresa Teng's album Island Love Songs Episode 6 - Small Town Story, released in 1979. Between April 14 and April 29, 1979, the song became the three-week champion song of Hong Kong Commercial Radio's Chinese Songs Ring Formation.
Background of the creation of "Small Town Story"
In 1979, director Li Hsing brought Chung Chun-tao and Lin Feng-jiao to the small town of Sanyi, a town famous for its wood carvings in the center of Taiwan, to shoot the movie "Small Town Story", and wanted to have a theme song for the movie, so he found Weng Ching-Xi to be in charge of the theme song's music score, and lyricist Chuang Nu to write down the lyrics.
The director's process of choosing a singer for the song did not go smoothly, with some singers giving up because the melody was too simple and flat to sing well. Eventually composer Weng Qingxi recommended Teresa Teng to the director to sing the song, saying that Teresa Teng was the headliner (singer) and could do no wrong. In the end, Teresa was impressed by the composer's sincerity and agreed to sing. Sure enough, Teresa lived up to her high expectations and sang the song with its usual tune full of charm.
