West Coast Rap is a genre of popular music, represented by?N.W.A whose grinding vocals and urbane content were topped off with a tougher voice, plus the fact that it retained its original basic function as party music, all of which made it a major force in hip-hop in the 1990s. major force.

Public Enemy, Boogie Down Productions, Run-D.M.C. and other cream of the crop East Coast artists drew directly on the simplicity and directness of their predecessors, contrasting it with the glitz and glamour of the West Coast. The result was more angular beats and austere yet powerful rhymes. As the East and West coasts merged and rap became an alloy of cultures on both sides of the border, the clear and crisp East Coast sound continued to flourish.

Influenced by Hip-Hop predecessors such as?Grandmaster Flash?and Afrika Bambatta, West Coast rap strayed further from old-school rap than East Coast rap. They use a more ?funky? distinctive beat that supports smooth, melodic tunes. West Coast rappers were also the first to bring "gangsta" culture to the forefront of Hip-Hop culture, with its mixed bag of good and bad.
While the boundaries between East and West Coast rap are slowly fading as the genre continues to evolve, there is still a distinctly West Coast system, ranging from quintessential rappers N.W.A. to Snoop Dogg and Vallejo to California's E-40.

Rap music originated as a cross-cultural product. Most of its important early interns include Kool Herc, D.J. Hollywood, and Afrika Bambaataa, who was either an immigrant or a first-generation American of Caribbean ancestry. Herc and Hollywood are believed to have introduced cuts of Jamaican styles and blended them into the musical culture of the South Bronx.
By most accounts Herc was the first DJ to buy two copies of the same record for 15 second breaks (rhythmic help) in the middle. By mixing repeatedly between the two copies he was able to double, or indefinitely expand the breaks into triples. In doing so, Herc deconstructed and effectively reconstructed the so-called found sound, using the turntable as an instrument.
The origins of rap can be traced back to the chanting passages in the roots of black music, and by the '70s rap had formalized its style, with most of the credit going to DJs in the then-popular discotheques, who mixed the funk beats that were popular among blacks at the time with popular disco rhythms and repeated the same record over and over again on the record player, doing their own LOOPS.
