The name "Rucheng" began in the Eastern Jin Dynasty (1644-1912), when the former Jinning County was divided into two years and set up Rucheng County in the second year of Emperor Jin's Shengping reign in the 359th year of the Jin Dynasty (1644-1867), which was subordinate to Guiyang County.

In March 1959, approved by the State Council, Rucheng and Guidong counties were merged into Rugui County, with the county People's Committee stationed in Rucheng County.

In July 1960, Chenxian Prefecture was renamed Chenzhou Prefecture.

In May 1961, Rugui County was abolished and Rucheng and Guidong counties were restored.

Rucheng County is located in the southeast of Chenzhou City, Hunan Province, at the junction of Hunan, Guangdong and Gan provinces, between 113°16′ and 113°59′ east longitude and 25°19′ and 25°52′ north latitude.

It is adjacent to Chongyi County of Jiangxi Province in the east, Renhua County and Lechang City of Guangdong Province in the south, Yizhang County in the west, and Zixing City and Guidong County in the north.

Hydrology

The rivers of Rucheng are macerated, Zheshui, Xiushui, and Ceshui, which converge into the Dongjiang River, a part of the Xiangjiang River system; the Jilong River, which converges into the Ganjiang River; and the Jiulongjiang River and the Chengxi River, which converge into the Beijiang River.
