The Red Detachment of Women is a model of what dance art is all about

For more than fifty years since the Chinese ballet classic Red Detachment of Women came into being, its artistic charm, creativity, vitality, and infectious power have inspired countless people.

It shows the world the indomitable spirit of struggle of the Chinese nation while blossoming a flower of Chinese national ballet art. It is a model of the successful fusion of Eastern and Western culture and art, as well as a milestone in the history of Chinese ballet creation, and has now become a flag passed down from generation to generation by the Central Ballet.

On January 19-20, the Central Ballet will stage the ballet "The Red Detachment of Women" at the Guangzhou Grand Theater.

"The Red Detachment of Women" takes place on the Chinese island of Hainan in the 1920s and 1930s. The ballet tells the story of Qionghua, a maid who escapes from the house of the bully Nanbaotian, and with the help of Hong Changqing, a party representative of the Red Army, and her comrades, grows up to be a determined revolutionary soldier through the trials of blood and fire, depicting a magnificent picture of the strength and indomitable nature of Chinese women.

The Central Ballet (also known as the National Ballet of China) was founded in December 1959, with a cast of dancers trained by professional colleges and universities. The cast and crew are made up of first-rate artistic talents trained by professional colleges and universities. With the support of all sectors of society, the troupe draws on the strengths of different styles from different schools on top of the solid foundation of the Russian school.

In addition to introducing and rehearsing a large number of world classics such as Swan Lake, Don Quixote, The Little Mermaid, The Dancing Girl, Cinderella and The Jewel, the troupe also creates a large number of fine works with distinctive national characteristics such as The Red Detachment of Women, Blessings and The Yellow River, and has successfully explored a path of development and creation of Chinese ballet that is a perfect fusion of the classical and the modern, and the national and the world.
