The Purple Bamboo Tune is a traditional minstrel song widely spread in Southern Jiangsu, Shanghai, most of Zhejiang, and Southern Anhui, etc. Its origin can be traced back to the folk songs of the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period. After being sung and modified by successive generations of artists, the Purple Bamboo Tunes of various places have added their own local characteristics and differed in the treatment of syllables. Its rhythm is bright, melodious, undulating and crisp, with the soft Wunong language of the Jiangnan water town and the unrestrained but not losing introversion, subtle lyricism, melodious and euphemistic folk tune of the Haikai culture, which is very rich in the local flavor of Jiangnan. Because it is widely sung and influential, and the melody is bright and beautiful, cheerful and smooth, it can be said to represent the image of Shanghai's works.
