p>Synopsis
Parvana, 11 years old, has a poor and happy home in Kabul. Her home is so straitened that wind and sand pour in from all sides. It was a broken home, but it had clean and brilliant dreams. Her father, an enlightened teacher, taught her and her sister to read and write, and told them history and fables with hidden truths.
Whenever they were so poor that they had to drink water to satisfy their hunger, the father took his daughters to the market to sell their belongings, and Pavana's beloved dresses were sold. But that's not the worst of it. In 2001, in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, women were not allowed to show their faces, let alone get an education. So Daddy was taken by the Taliban.
The poor have to eat, and they always starve too quickly. The family of four was living in a sprawling house in the middle of nowhere, with her mother sick and her younger brother waiting to be fed. Pawana refused to wait to die, so she cut off her long, beloved hair, put on boy's clothes, and went to the bazaar to find out what had happened to her father.
