Aomori Sandman Festival is said to have been transformed from the Chinese Tanabata Festival, which was fused with the local customs of the Tsugaru region into lanterns made of paper, bamboo and candles. It is also called a fire festival because candle flame used to be used in the lanterns.

The Sandman lanterns used to be paraded by towns and villages, but now they are organized by corporations and private organizations, making them one of Japan's representative festivals.

The origin of the Sandman Festival has been described in different ways. The main theory is that because of the heat of summer in Aomori Prefecture, people tend to get tired and lazy, and the festival is meant to keep everyone energized on summer days, drive away the sandman and put all their energy into their work, and get a good harvest.

What is a "sandman" is a huge, four-ton lantern float on which characters and spirits from mythology, history and Japanese legend are mounted.

During the festival, more than 20 large-scale Sandman lanterns based on Kabuki, history and mythology are paraded. Blue Sea Park next to ASPAM, Aomori Prefectural Tourism Museum (2-1 Yasukata, Aomori-shi, Aomori). It is about an 8-minute walk from Aomori Station on JR. Sendai Tanabata Matsuri

Akita Kabuto Matsuri

1. Origin

The Kabuto Matsuri festival originated in the Edo period, and it is said to be a festival to drive away the demons of summer sleep, to prevent illnesses, and to pray for the safety of the family, and the Kabuto, which is held up high like the ears of a rice plant, is said to be a prayer for a good harvest.

During the festival, there will be a parade on the Pole Light Avenue. Pole lights are lanterns, which come in different sizes, with the largest being 12 meters and 50 kilograms, and can hold up to 46 lanterns lit by candles. Parade-goers sing "dokkoisho,

Yamagata Hanagasa Matsuri

The Hanagasa Matsuri was developed from the "Hanagasa Yondo Parade", which is a part of the festival. Hanagasa Odori" is the theme song of the Hanagasa Festival.

Morioka Sansa Odori Festival

The Sansa Odori Festival originated from the "Legend of the Three Stones". In Morioka, an evil spirit called Roro_ appeared at the foot of the castle, and the townspeople felt so much pain and suffering that they prayed to the god of Mishi to put the evil spirit to rest. The God of the Three Rocks caught the evil spirit, and the people, who were overjoyed at having the spirit vanquished, danced around the three large rocks, which is said to be the origin of the Sansa Dance.

First, there is the Sansa Odori parade, which usually starts at 6 p.m. There is a parade of Sansa Odori ladies, Sansa Taiko drumming groups, and dance troupes, as well as traditional Sansa Odori dances, floats, and processions that tourists can participate in that are worth seeing.
