About the Author
Liu Yuxi (772-842), courtesy name Mengde, was a native of Luoyang (present-day Luoyang City, Henan Province). In his early years, he lived in Jiaxing and Huzhou, and in the first year of Yongzhen (805), he was promoted to the rank of cantonment officer, and was appointed as the judge of salt and iron, and was involved in the innovation of the country. When Emperor Xianzong was established, he was relegated to the position of assassin of Lianzhou, and then to the position of secretary of Longzhou. In the 10th year of Yuanhe's reign (815), he returned to the capital, and because of his poems involving ridicule, he was relegated to the post of assassin of Lianzhou, and then to the post of assassin of Kui and Hezhou. In the beginning of Daho, he entered the court as a guest of honor, the Ministry of Rites, acting as a bachelor of Jixianzhi, and resumed his work as an assassin of Su, Ru, and Tong states. In the first year of Kaicheng (836), he took the Prince's guest as a division of Dongdu, and was known as Liu Binke. He had the best friendship with Liu Zongyuan and was known as "Liu Liu". He was also known as "Liu Bai" with Bai Juyi. His poems excel in all genres, mostly reflecting current affairs and politics, as well as nostalgic and sentimental works. His poems are broad in subject matter, full of emotion, fluent and natural. His poems are full of enterprising spirit and meaningful philosophical meaning. He was so robust and vigorous, and so majestic that Bai Juyi regarded him as a "poetic hero". Ming Hu Zhenheng also said that "the gas of the present and the past, the word is always gorgeous, the use does not seem to be much over the top, but all cozy, the language can be sung, the real talent of the most powerful" ("Tang Yin Jiezhi"). Flying Kite Exercise", "Ancient Reminiscences of Mount Xisai", "Five Questions on Jinling", "Beginning to Hear the Autumn Breeze", "Autumn Lyrics" and other poems are all masterpieces of the world. He studied folk songs and made Bamboo Branch Lyrics, etc., which y got the essence of the music of the Southern Dynasty, and Huang Tingjian of the Song Dynasty commented that "the meaning of the lyrics is so high and marvelous that it can be a unique step in the Yuanhe period", and Su Shi sighed that it was "running away from the dust and not to be pursued" (cited by Camas Regency Fishing Hidden Writings). Liu Yuxi was widely influential in later times, and his prose was long on reasoning, with Tianlun and Yinlun as his masterpieces. Liu Yuxi was relegated to the post of Secretary of the State of Langzhou (present-day Changde, Hunan Province) because of his participation in Wang Shuwen's political innovation activities with Liu Zongyuan, etc. During his relegation career, Liu Yuxi lived for a long time in the area of the Bashan Mountains and Chushui River, and he was not willing to be lonely, and during his ten years in Langzhou, he often recited poems to maintain his optimistic mood.
The relegation life made Liu Yuxi and the people's life closer. The ethnic minorities around Lanzhou liked to sing folk songs. As a minor official, Liu Yuxi never cared about his status, and often participated in folk songs and chants, and often helped the Yi people to write popular lyrics, which may be circulated in the folk at that time, and were not recorded in writing, so they have been lost.
But from then on, he became interested in folk songs. He thought that there was a real feeling of love of life and simple language in folk songs, so he absorbed these features in them.
Later, he traveled to Kui Zhou. Kui Zhou is in the eastern part of Sichuan Province, where a kind of "Bamboo Branch Lyrics" was popular, a kind of folk song combined with music and dance. During festivals, the local people played flutes and drums to catch the festivals. In the gatherings, young men and women sing and dance to the Bamboo Branch, competing to see who can sing the most and the best.
Liu Yuxi may not fully understand the local dialect, but the flavor of this folk song, rhythmic and melodious, more than he heard in Langzhou.
