Extended Information:

The process of the SARS outbreak in 2003:

The SARS outbreak first started on November 16, 2002 in Shunde, Guangdong Province. The first reported case was Huang Xingchu, who was found sick in Heyuan City on Dec. 15, 2002, and was discharged from the hospital on Jan. 10, 2003, and was later identified as China's first reported case of atypical pneumonia.

In late December 2002, rumors of a strange and deadly disease emerged in Guangdong, and even rumors of mass deaths in some hospitals due to the disease.

Since the rumors spread that boiling vinegar and drinking Banlangen could prevent the disease, there was a rush to buy rice vinegar and Banlangen in the market. Many people who could not buy rice vinegar and panax quinquefolium called their friends and relatives in Hong Kong for help, making their illness known to the outside world.

On the other hand, because of Hong Kong's proximity to Guangdong province, many workers with friends and relatives in the province have asked their employers to boil rice vinegar in their workplaces to sterilize the vapors. Some employers have rejected this nonsensical method, but others have complied for the sake of their employees' peace of mind.
