Customs of the Buyi People in Guizhou

The Buyei people are rich in literature and art. Myths, stories, fairy tales, fables, proverbs, poems and other oral literature are widely circulated among the people, recounting the ancient history of the nation and glorifying the diligence and courage of the working people.

The Buyei are good at singing and dancing. In social occasions and young men and women talk about love, often with songs to express their feelings. The renowned bamboo fabrics such as batiks, mats and hats are simple in color, novel in pattern and exquisite in construction, which are popular among the people of all ethnic groups. The current population of the Buyi is 2.545 million, mainly in Guizhou, with a small number in Sichuan. In Yunnan, there are more than 34,000 people living in the Buyei areas of Luoping and Fuyuan counties, and a small number of them in Shizong, Maguan and Hekou counties. The Buyi were gradually developed by the "Luo Yue" and later the "Bureaucrat" among the ancient Yue people, and were called "Duyun Barbarians" in the Fifth Dynasty, and " Bafan", "Zhongmiao", "Zhongjia", etc., and called themselves "Buyi", "Burao", etc.. They call themselves "Buyei" and "Burao". The Buyi in Yunnan were moved from Kaili in Guizhou and Guangxi.

The Buyei live in villages on flat dams or near river valleys, and both men and women like to wear blue, green, black, white and other multi-colored cloth clothing. The young and middle-aged men mostly wear turban, short jacket with lapel (or long shirt with big lapel) and long pants. Older people mostly wear short or long shirts with lapels. Women's clothing varies from place to place, some wear long blue and black pleated skirts, some like to embroider flowers on their clothes, and some like to wrap their heads in white towels. The Buyei people generally abide by the social virtue of "honoring the elderly and respecting the young" and respect the elderly at all times. If a family is in trouble, the whole tribe will help each other. Buyei women are good at weaving and embroidery, festivals in addition to the Spring Festival, Danyang, Mid-Autumn Festival is basically the same as the Han Chinese, there are "February 2", "March 3", "April 8", There are also national festivals such as "February 2", "March 3", "April 8", "June 6" and "June 24".
