A World of Love Wu Shouci: Hands on Tulin A World of Love

I have a deep affection for libraries, and I can't leave them. I started my career in this field, from not knowing much to knowing a lot, I went through a process, which was realized through the guidance of my teachers, the support of my friends, and my own efforts. I have overcome a lot of difficulties and obstacles in this process, and I feel very happy every step of the way.

I have never been satisfied with myself, I always feel that when I finish something, my heart will be more solid. The main thing is to do the work of a scientific attitude, there is the spirit of seeking truth from facts, can not exaggerate the achievements, can not be complacent, can not look down on others, look at the strengths of others, can not take their own strengths than the shortcomings of others, so that I can and teachers, students, as well as the academic **** the same range of colleagues in the scope of the body under the influence of the harmonious coexistence of colleagues, **** with progress.

My whole life, always long engaged in teaching and research work in librarianship, this is my life path, I've been on this road for most of my life, I have to go down firmly ......

That said in 2007, Tulin has a "big thing"! These congratulatory letters and messages were subsequently published in a collection called "The Collection of Salary Transmission". Mr. Wu to enjoy this award, is inseparable from his academic and character, there is a sentence describing Professor Wu, said he "gentle and elegant temperament, academic rigor and truth-seeking, rich and heavy thinking, character and perseverance", y recognized by colleagues in the industry; and "salary" to summarize the two words. The word "pay" to summarize Wu Lao, is more appropriate, since October 1973 to Peking University, Department of Librarianship (now the Department of Information Management) since teaching, he is completely rooted in the cause of librarianship education, seventy-two of this year, Wu Lao, is still taking their own doctoral students. And talking about Wu's hand Tulin, it is more to be traced back to 1957 when he was admitted to the Department of Librarianship at Peking University, this hand, is a lifetime ......

Into the librarianship profession

September 1957, through the participation in the National Unified Examination, Wu Huozi was admitted to Peking University, Department of Librarianship. At that time, China's librarianship education is not very familiar, Wu Huici entered the Peking University Department of Librarianship, but just established 10 years, the reason for enrollment in this profession, Wu Huici said that there is indeed a certain degree of blindness: "Fushan Middle School is located in the mountains, there is nothing to play with, and we have not even seen the movie, all day is to study. In such an environment, I developed the habit of reading. When I took the national examination, I only had a very simple idea that it would be very convenient to read books if I could work in a library in the future. It was with such a hazy idea that I took a step into this profession."

Then the Peking University Department of Librarianship was full of famous teachers, and the founder of the department, the famous Dunhuang scholar and bibliographer Mr. Wang Chongmin, as well as professors such as Liu Guojun, Chen Hongshun, Deng Yanlin, and Zhou Wenjun, led the young Wu into the field of librarianship. He has always been hard work in the strong learning atmosphere of Peking University like a fish out of water, coupled with the guidance and help of famous teachers, so that the more he learns this professional interest in the more intense.

In 1961, Wu graduated from Peking University, was assigned to work in the Tianjin Library. This work, is 12 years. In these 12 years, he has done grass-roots training, business counseling, publicity, antiquarian book processing ...... Wu Huo-Chi is very important to work in the Tianjin Library in 12 years, "because it is from the practical point of view to further verify and enrich my professional knowledge. Although the content of the work is limited, but I am very hard, work attitude and quality of work by everyone." The experience laid a practical foundation for Wu's later teaching and research.

"Practice is very important, and it is difficult to develop further without combining book knowledge with practical experience. Practice makes me gradually understand a truth: the study of librarianship must be built on the basis of materialism, detached from the materialist basis of the study will inevitably produce limitations in thinking.

Practice makes me learn a lot of things, which can not be learned from books. The problems I encountered and the knowledge I gained in practice were a rich source of nourishment for my later teaching. I wrote some books, wrote a lot of articles, I always think that the Tianjin Library is a fertile soil. This fertile soil for my further study of librarianship laid a good foundation."

Students are the most cherished treasure

In 1973, Wu Shuici transferred back to Peking University to teach, "back to the alma mater, the mood has become very good. Because I studied at Peking University, and now I can come back to contribute to the development of my alma mater and the construction of the library discipline, I feel very happy. At that time, Wu was more than 30 years old, it is a good age, full of energy, well succeeded Wang Chongmin and other older generation of librarianship educators work, become one of the main designers of the basic curriculum of librarianship in colleges and universities across the country. At that time the conditions were very difficult, Wu lived in Beida, but also to teach in Changping branch, there are classes in the morning at six o'clock in the morning to catch the shuttle bus to Changping class. At that time there is no highway, from Peking University to the Changping branch school to walk for more than an hour, to the branch school, we have to continuously on more than three hours of class, after class to eat in Changping, and then immediately catch the shuttle back to Peking University, and then ride a bicycle home, often a week only to go home once. In order to ensure that the class time, Wu Wu Shuici has been insisting on riding a bicycle, riding for more than 30 years. Later on, his family did not allow him to ride in his old age, and his partner sold the bike, and he had a hard time for a while.

Since September 1977, Wu began to independently undertake the teaching of the basic course Introduction to Librarianship at Peking University. At that time, the course was opened as an introductory course for librarianship majors, that is, through lectures, so that beginners have a basic understanding of libraries, libraries, library work, the library business in its entirety. But after a period of time, students reflected that the teaching content "thin", "no theoretical height of the discipline", can not satisfy their desire for knowledge, which is also a common phenomenon in the same period of time in various colleges and universities. This phenomenon attracted the attention of Wu Shui-Chi and other relevant course instructors. Into the 1980s, librarianship toward the direction of comprehensive development, the related disciplines of mutual penetration and integration, from the description of the technical methods gradually sublimated to the theoretical thinking, some foreign theoretical works of librarianship has also been introduced. After several national symposiums on basic courses in library science, the idea of improving the level of theoretical teaching in basic courses in library science has been gradually realized. In such an academic environment and background, from 1984, Wu Huizi in the "Outline of Librarianship" syllabus clearly states that this course not only carries the task of professional enlightenment, the purpose of its teaching is to help students use the correct viewpoints and methods, a systematic mastery of the basic theories of librarianship and the basic knowledge, to understand the scope of librarianship research in the past, the status quo and the future trend, to lay a preliminary theoretical foundation for the study of other professional courses. Lay a preliminary theoretical foundation for the study of other specialized courses. To this end, he constantly updated the content of teaching, and strive to improve the scientific and systematic classroom teaching, after 10 years of efforts, the "Outline of Librarianship" course content has new changes, forming a new layout of teaching to the basic theory and basic knowledge as the skeleton. Like this kind of pioneering work, in the WuWuXingCi long engaged in the basic theory of librarianship teaching and research work, there are many times, he is the main author of the preparation of the first basic syllabus of librarianship, is the first demonstration textbook "foundation of librarianship" (1981) is a major participant in the work, and later this work is the national education commission for the selection of the first prize.

Wu started to recruit master's degree students in 1983 and doctoral students in 1996. Since the enrollment of doctoral students, he no longer enrolls master's students, because of limited energy, can only focus on training doctoral students. Professor Wu has trained 27 master's students, about two-thirds of whom are abroad, and most of whom are still engaged in the library science profession. "I focus on doctoral students, I was approved as a doctoral supervisor in 1994, when the doctoral supervisor is the national selection, a school only one or two places. I have trained 25 doctoral students, of which 6 are studying. 19 have graduated. I am very happy that 19 of them have graduated, and most of them have been promoted to professors, and some of them have been selected as doctoral supervisors. Most of them have been promoted to professors and some have been selected as supervisors of doctoral students. They are teaching in various colleges and universities as the backbone of the program, and some of them have also trained their own doctoral students." Talking about his disciples, Prof. Wu is always happy, and his students are his most cherished treasure.

"I have more than 50 master's degree students plus doctoral students, which can be said to be better in librarianship contributing their wisdom." Wu had some experiences in the process of training doctoral students:

First, the relationship between supervisor and student is both teacher and student, and also a friend. He is strict and comprehensive requirements of students, focusing on cultivating students' innovative ability, in strict accordance with the high standards of Peking University to train doctoral students, students feel that they have gained a lot. Some of them said that studying for Mr. Wu's doctorate has changed the trajectory of my life. And I have learned a lot from them.

Secondly, teachers must care for their students in a holistic way to make them successful. Not only do they care about their studies, but they also care about how they behave, and they also care about their lives and employment.

Wu firmly believes that students are the most valuable asset. He said: "This sentence can be interpreted in this way, these talented people themselves are the wealth of society, in addition they will eventually create more spiritual wealth for the community, which is even more valuable." "Until now, I am still on the front line of training doctoral students, engaged in teaching and research work. I think the most important aspect of training doctoral students is to find ways to bring them to the forefront of the discipline in the fastest possible time, so that they can carry out research at the forefront of the discipline, show their skills, and publish some insightful papers. I think in my lifetime, as long as I can still work, I will continue to train doctoral students well."

Wu said that the overall care of students, is by no means empty words, he has a lot of opportunities to participate in academic conferences or speeches around the world every year, because the peach and plum all over the world, wherever they go, often have students rushed to visit the teacher, no matter how many years ago the students, he can always tell the name and work unit. As a result, Wu was respected by many students.

Because of his work, Wu has traveled to dozens of countries, including the United States, France, the Netherlands and Japan, to give lectures and participate in academic conferences. This is mainly concentrated in the period when he served as chairman of the Department of Information Management of Peking University, because of these jobs, he and foreign scholars have established good academic contacts, some of them have become very good friends. Wu so through them to send their doctoral students to other regions of the school training, for the students, this is a good opportunity to let them broaden their horizons, so that they y appreciate how to better do a graduate student, a student said: "I think that the research and teaching can not be closed, it should be open, more open. Only by doing so can we be better prepared for the big stage of the world".

Life of diligence, learning

In the lead at the same time, a life of diligence, Prof. Wu has never relaxed his academic research in the field of basic theories of librarianship, of course, this is also related to the University of North America in the assessment of teachers' academic research work has always insisted on high standards. Since 1973, he has published articles every year and books every two or three years. In terms of quantity, Prof. Wu has published more than 20 monographs and textbooks, including Introduction to Librarianship and Theory and Methods of Librarianship, and more than 300 papers. He has also participated in the publication of Encyclopedia of China? Librarianship? Intelligence? He was the main contributor to the compilation of the volume of "Archives", in which he served as the deputy editor of "Comprehensive Branches of Librarianship". He was promoted to the rank of professor in 1991 and to the rank of doctoral supervisor in 1994.

From 1996 to 2002, Wu served as chairman of the Department of Information Management at Peking University, and for some time also served as secretary of the Party Committee of the department, which was a very busy time, but in addition to completing the administrative work, he still insisted on publishing his thesis. Time and work conflicts, will inevitably produce some contradictions, but "I think I handle it better, administrative work as usual, the publication of thesis has not been reduced", this is by hard work out. Wu is 72 years old this year, before the age of 65, he did not sleep before 12 o'clock every night. "Now that I'm getting older, I have to take into account my health, but I also insist on research work. I think there is no end to research, and there is still a lot to be done."

Additionally, he has many social positions, once served as the State Council Academic Degrees Committee, the convener of the discipline of graphic archives, which is a very important work, but also a relatively high academic status of a work. He has also served as the director of the Teaching Steering Committee of Librarianship of the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, the vice-president of the Chinese Library Association (for two terms) and the director of the Academic Committee (for four terms), as well as a part-time professor at Nanjing University, Nankai University, Sun Yat-sen University, Jilin University, etc. He is now the editor of the Journal of University Libraries. Now he is also the deputy director of the editorial board of the Journal of University Libraries, and an editorial board member of the core journals such as the Journal of Chinese Libraries and the Journal of Intelligence. "Holding so many positions, for me personally there are gains and losses. On the whole, although I have spent some time and energy on these academic part-time jobs, as long as they serve the society, they are worthwhile. These jobs have also helped me to think about a lot of issues, taught me how to organize librarianship research, how to identify young and middle-aged scholars with strengths and potential for development, and enabled me to master the ability to deal with some complex issues. I also learned how to communicate with young people, how to respect them, guide them and help them to do their work better. These social part-time jobs are very tiring and tedious, but they are a kind of cultivation, a kind of training, and a kind of improvement for me. As a scholar, can not be a nerd, to be good at engaging in various aspects of different levels, different objects of academic research."

Professor Li Chao-ping, Department of Information Resources Management, School of Public **** Management, Zhejiang University, once commented: "For librarianship, there are some people's names seem to have symbolic significance, for example, Mr. Peng Fei-zhang, reminiscent of cataloging; Mr. Zhang Qiyu, reminiscent of the intelligence retrieval of the language; Mr. Wu Huo-ci, any one engaged in librarianship research, will not think twice. Anyone engaged in librarianship research will unthinkingly associate Mr. Wu with basic theoretical research in librarianship." Being able to let others associate themselves with a field of study is in itself a sign of one's achievement.
