When the curtain rises, it is Easter morning in a Sicilian village in Italy, the sound of Turiddu singing a Sicilian ditty is heard. The villagers are singing a chorus of seasonal songs. Alfio, surrounded by the villagers, sings, and after the villagers have left, he asks Turiddu's mother, Lucia, about Turiddu's whereabouts. Lucia says that Turiddu has gone to the neighboring Francofonte to buy some wine for the family's inn. Alfio, on the other hand, pointed out that Turiddu was not far from his house in the village, and that he had seen him this morning, and Santuzza hastened to ask Lucia to keep quiet. At that moment, the sound of Latin Easter psalms interrupts their conversation. When the rest of the village had gone to the church, Santuzza revealed the truth to Lucia, Turiddu's mother, and sadly sang the famous aria "As Mother Knows", which describes Turiddu's abandonment of her and his passionate relationship with Lola. When Lucia entered the church, Santuzza was left alone on stage waiting for Turiddu to appear. As expected, Turiddu comes on stage and Santuzza asks Turiddu to change his mind and turn back from Lola and says that she has seen him hanging around Lola's house at dusk. Turiddu curses Santuzza's jealousy. At that moment Lola appeared, she was going to the church and went into it, having taunted Santuzza. At this point, despite Santuzza's pleas, Turiddu heartlessly ran over Santuzza and entered the church. As Santuzza is filled with hatred, he informs Lola's husband, Alfio, who happens to be on the stage, of the adulterous relationship between his wife, Lola, and Turiddu, and Alfio, furious, swears revenge on the two men in the voice of "love has turned to hate". ------ is followed by one of the show's most famous interludes, the "Interlude". --------- " After the interlude, the play enters the second half. The villagers lure Lola away and Alfio bites Turiddu's right ear, as is customary in a traditional duel. Before going to the duel, Turiddu, pretending to be drunk, goes to see his mother Lucia to ask her to give him her blessing, and says to his mother, who is y surprised, that if he doesn't come back she should take care of Santuzza, and so, after kissing her goodbye, he goes to the back of the church to fight the duel with Alfio, while Santuzza, embraced by Lucia, seems to feel that something bad is going to happen. The women are gathered in the square, when suddenly a woman runs up screaming and shouting that Turiddu has been killed. Santuzza and Lucia, who have heard the news, fall to the ground and the women gather to support them. The end of the play.
