October Sky Synopsis
In the Coalwoods region of West Virginia, coal mining is at the center of everyone's lives in the area. John Hickman (Chris Cooper), Horner's father, has worked his way up to the position of overseer, establishing himself and his authority in the area. John loves the coal mines because it's the reason the whole area exists. If no one had discovered coal there, there would be no Coalwood. He is the centerpiece of the region, and he wants Horner and his brother Jim to take over.
But Jim wins a football scholarship to stay in school, and Horner has plans of his own to get out. He wants to get out of Coalwood to pursue his ambition to be a scientist, and his father doesn't understand. He wants to be a scientist, and his father doesn't understand. So they are in constant conflict. Horner grows up in this situation, experiencing the anger of his father, the love of his lover, the hatred of his brother and the love of his friends.
Inspired by rocket pioneer Wernher von Braun, Horner invented his first rocket. He took gunpowder from a small firecracker and put it into a flashlight, which he thought would fly three hundred feet high, but it exploded in his mother's small garden. But he is undeterred and gathers two helpers, Roe Lee (William Lee Scott) and O'Dell (Chad Lindberg), and with the help of a local mathematician, Quentin (Chris Owen), he designs and builds a series of rockets. Horner isn't a math genius himself, but Quentin is; he's not good at collecting, but Tanya O'Dell knows how to get the materials he needs; and Roe Lee is a master of socializing, able to lure people into handing over what they need. Horner only had enthusiasm and confidence, but he gave them all enthusiasm and confidence.
Their physical chemistry teacher, Lilae (Lauraden), gets them a book on rocketry, and they teach themselves and use what they learn on their rockets. Lillet uses her position as a teacher to educate and inspire the kids, especially Horner, to think that he can become the character he wants to be. And so whatever obstacles he encountered, he amazingly overcame them.
After a series of accidents, they set up a launch site in an abandoned dump outside the village and named it "Coalwood Point". Their first successful launch was called "Auk One", which means a flightless bird. The rocket flew in an arc and headed for the coal mines, scattering people in all directions, and finally crashed near Horner's father's office. This causes his father to become furious. Horner realizes that his father is not interested in the rocket or what he has done. This makes him very sad, annoyed and frustrated.
While John Hickman thinks his son is wasting his energy, his wife Elsie (Natalie Canady) encourages his son to persevere, and she's willing to do whatever it takes to make her child's dreams come true. And John Hickman is more realistic: not every dream can become a reality, and not everyone can be a rocket scientist, especially not in a place like West Virginia, where rockets aren't even heard of much. In fact, the father loves his child, but it shows because the child does not grow up the way the father has arranged for him to. Though he was a stern man, at heart he was not. He thinks that studying rockets - something he knows very little about - is stupid and he doesn't want the sadness that the child might show at the unknown outcome after putting so much passion into it.
As their rockets flew higher and straighter, the children became local celebrities. Throngs of people watched them launch their rockets, and they earned money from selling scrap, metal scraps, and other things. By the end of the day, their rockets were flying higher and higher, and entering science fairs and even winning prizes seemed within reach. It became a dream not only for them, but for the whole region.
In February 1998, Honahi Honeckerman retired from NASA as an engineer.
3. Chasing Dreams
Chasing Dreams
The plot of Chasing Dreams
An inspirational movie adapted from a true story, the protagonist, Rudy, has dreamed of becoming a star of American soccer since he was a child, playing for the varsity team of the church university he admires. But his poor family, short stature, and mediocre athletic performance made it difficult for him to fulfill his dream. However, he was not discouraged at all, he saved up money to go to prerequisite courses, and mixed into the college department of the stadium part-time job, after a few cold summers of hard work, Rudy finally joined the college soccer team, but sandwiched in the middle of the many big players he did not have the opportunity to play. But he never gets a chance to play until the final game, when his teammates are touched by Rudy's perseverance and force the coach to let him play, and Rudy finally lets his father and brother, who have traveled to see him play, see an impossible miracle. David Ainsberg David Ainsberg's direction succinctly and powerfully explains the theme of "nothing is difficult, only those who have the will", and Sean Astin vividly portrays Rudy's character. Sean Astin's vivid portrayal of Rudy's image and spirit makes for a very moving performance.
=====================================
The story takes place in a small town in the U.S., where most of the town's residents work in the town's steel mill. Rudy, the main character in the play, aspires to be a member of the Notre Dame soccer team when he's eight or nine years old. Growing up, he still did not have what it takes to get into this prestigious school because he was not the child of a rich family, did not have a good academic record, and did not have the burly physique of an American soccer player. His father and older brothers didn't think much of him, and his childhood sweetheart left him, but a dream is a dream, and you don't have to care about what other people think, you don't have to prove it to anyone, you just have to be true to your inner voice, and that melody will trigger your inner potential.
Rudy left the steel mill with his savings, and in order to get into Notre Dame, he went into a nearby college to get better grades. He was rejected by Notre Dame for two years in a row, but he didn't give up, and he stuck to his dream.
Rudy didn't have a big body, and when he stood with the other players, he could only stand on someone else's shoulders, but his spirit of fighting and his seriousness in practicing spurred on the other players, and Rudy became a kind of role model, and his hard work created a miracle in his own life.
In the final game, he finally made it out, leading his teammates out of the tunnel. His family hitchhiked from their hometown to see him, and in the midst of a snowy season, they chanted Rudy's name along with the crowd, and it was Rudy's first and last game, and he made it. At the end of the game, he was carried heroically off the field, an unprecedented gesture by Notre Dame's varsity soccer team to honor a teammate, and I believe that for Rudy, this life was enough.
