Ancient Writings on Conversation with a Thirsty Fish

The story of the "perch that dries up" is in Zhuangzi (《庄子 外物》).

Originally:

Zhuang Zhou's family was poor, so he went to lend corn to the Marquis of Jianhe. The Marquis of Jianhe said, "No. I will get eup gold, I will lend my son 300 gold, can it?" Zhuang Zhou wrathful color, said "Zhou yesterday, there are in the road and call, Zhou Gu see the rut in the perch fish. Zhou asked: 'perch to come, son of what for?' He said: 'I am a minister of the East China Sea. Will you have a bucket of water to live me?' Zhou said: 'No, I will travel south to the king of Wu and Yue, and welcome the son by stirring up the water of Xijiang River. The perch said angrily: 'I have lost my constant and I have no place to go. I get a bucket liter of water and live ear. You are saying this, had not as good as early to ask me in the withered fish of the restaurant!'" .

Translation

Zhuang Zhou's family was poor, so he went to the Marquis of Jianhe to borrow grain and rice. When the Supervisory River Hou saw Zhuang Zi's visit to his door for help, he readily agreed. He said, "Yes, I will lend you 300 taels of silver from the income I will receive from my fief, okay?" With an angry look on his face, Zhuang Zhou said, "I came yesterday, and on my way I heard shouting, and looking around I saw a carp in a dry rut. I asked it, saying, 'O Carp, what do you do?' The crucian carp replied, 'I used to be a little people in the East China Sea. Can you give a liter and a half of water to save my life?' I said, 'Yes, I will go to the south and lobby the kings of Wu and Yue to draw water from the West River to meet you, is that all right?' The carp said angrily, 'I have lost the water I cannot leave and am stuck here, I can live if I get a liter and a half of a dipper of water, and for you to say this, you might as well have come to me earlier in the store where you sell dried fish!'" .
