Toward the end of September 2015, NASA said in a press release that it had found strong "evidence" of liquid water on Mars.NASA Confirms Evidence That Liquid Water Flows on Today's Mars
The existence of water on Mars is not new. Back in 2008, the U.S. Phoenix rover found large amounts of ice stored in the polar regions of Mars. But there has been a lack of key evidence for the existence of liquid water. This time, NASA announced this conclusion from the paper "Spectroscopic evidence for hydrated salts in the seasonal slope pattern of Mars" published online on September 28 in the journal Nature Geoscience. Lujendra Ojha of the Georgia Institute of Technology and his colleagues speculated that some of the seasonally changing dark streaks on the walls of Martian craters could be related to intermittent water flow action. To prove this conjecture, they combined information obtained by high-resolution imaging equipment on board the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and the Compact Mars Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer (CMRIS) to obtain evidence for the presence of hydrated salts on Mars, which in turn led them to hypothesize the presence of water flow action based on the variations in the levels of hydrated salts.
