The Legend of Wu Mei Niang is a costume palace drama co-produced by Tang De Film and Television, Fan Bingbing Studio, The Reader Group, Evergrande Film and Television, and China Film, which is directed by Yijun Gao and starring Fan Bingbing, Zhang Fengyi, Li Zhiting, Zhang Junning, Zhang Ting, Zhou Haimei, Li Liren, and Li Xie.
The drama focuses on Wu Zetian's life journey from the age of 14, when she entered the palace at the age of 14, to her eventual ascension to the throne in imperial robes and crown, as well as her power struggles. The drama premiered on December 21, 2014 on Hunan TV's Golden Eagle Solo Theater and on January 14, 2015 on Zhejiang TV's China Blue Theater.
On March 31, 2015 the uncut version of the drama was aired on Taiwan's CTV and Taiwan's Zhongtian.
On April 26, 2015 the Cantonese edited version of the drama was broadcast on Hong Kong's Jade Channel and HD Jade Channel.
On August 9, 2015, The Legend of Wu Mei Niang won the National Audience's Favorite Drama Work Award at the 17th Huading Awards Chinese TV Drama Satisfaction Survey Release Ceremony.
