The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, created by ancient Chinese laborers, is an artificial miracle that rivals the Great Wall of China, and has been dug for more than 2,500 years. The national opera "Hurtful Death" is a contemporary work. Based on the 100th anniversary of Lu Xun's birth, it was composed and rehearsed by the China Opera and Dance Drama Theatre, organized by Wang Quan and Han Wei, with music by Shi Guangnan, and sung by Yin Xiumei, Cheng Zhi, Guan Mucun and Liu Yue. It was premiered at the Beijing People's Theater in 1981.
