Early and Family Life
Stephane grew up in Dublin's working-class Sheriff's Quarter in relative economic poverty. He was the fourth of five children in his family; his father, Martin, was a former decorator and his mother, Margaret (born 1949), was a cleaner. His siblings were Michelle, Tony, Alan and Mark. Gator is a Catholic. He was close to his sister Michelle all his life. Stephen's father was involved in an accident and as a result he had to be hospitalized for three months until September 2004 and was not unable to work his job. His mother then became a full-time caregiver.
Stephen attended elementary school at StLaurenceO'Toole and Secondary School at North Strand Technical College. As a teenager he was involved in various school musicals and plays such as Juno and Paycock. For many years he was estranged from his parents but reconciled with them in 2008 and visited them that year with Andrew Cowles, Stephen's gay partner.
In June '99, when a then 23-year-old Stephen discovered that someone was trying to sell the story of his gay identity to the press, Stephen resolutely decided to come clean and tell fans about his sexuality. As a member of one of the most popular boy bands of the past decade, Steven has a huge following of young fans, most of them female, and his coming out in such a public way is very brave and breaks down barriers for gay artists in the past. In the colorful world of show business, Steven remains humble, gentle, sensitive and shy. Fame and fortune haven't changed him, and he remains true to himself, admitting that he was a little nervous about the public reaction he would face when he decided to come out. Luckily, the rest of the group and his loyal fans have been nothing but supportive.
From 2000 to 2002, Steven suffered from depression and prescription drug addiction.
Stephen began dating computer engineer Andrew Cowle, who was introduced to him by their ****ing friends Elton John and David Furnish. Stephen and Cowles were married in 2003 in a wedding chapel while on vacation in Las Vegas.Gately entered into a civil partnership with Cowles on March 19, 2006, in a ceremony in London. The couple live in the village of Highgate, north London. Stephen spoke of his love for the village, saying he "wouldn't leave it for the world. It's got a great vibe and the people here are so smart." In July 2009, their house was broken into by burglars who took £80,000 of items, including a valuable Rolex watch, which Stephen bought with his first check. Stephen has worked in London all his life.
His manager Louis Walsh chose Stephen to join Boyzone when he was unaware of his sexuality and said that if he had known, he would have thought about it before choosing him, claiming less than a year before his death that "it wasn't cool for him to have a gay man in a band". Walsh described Stephen as his "very, very good friend" after the singer's death, saying, "Of all the people I've worked with, I don't think anyone has ever thanked me as much as Stephen. He always said to me 'If I wasn't at Boyzone, I don't know where I would be today, thank you for that''.
Career
Like most kids, Steven spent his childhood dreaming of fame and fortune. His first chance at acting came when he beat out 10,000 opponents his age in an audition for the movie "The Commitments."
Boyzone (pre-reunion)
Stephen joined Boyzone in 1993. The pop group made a name for themselves on Ireland's prestigious talent show The LateLateShow, but were dismissed by host GayByrne - although he later concluded that "they certainly deserved to have the last laugh". Boyzone then released their first single WorkingMyWayBacktoyou to great success in Ireland.
Boyzone's second single, "LoveMeForAReason," reached No. 2 in the UK charts in '94, establishing Boyzone as one of the most highly touted, exciting and premier idol groups to have successfully moved from Ireland to the international arena. Their next singles, "KeyToMyLife" and "So Good", continued their success, both reaching third place, and a cover of the CatStevens classic "FatherandSon" was their other runner-up single.
One hit after another continued to follow, from "Baby Can I Hold You" and "Isn't It Wonder" to "I Love The Way You Love Me," the Boys' D.C. Choir's string of No. 1 singles and albums became the introduction to the pop world for all the boy bands that followed. The Bible.
The Boys' D.C. choir's success has been reflected in the many awards they've won, both big and small. From winning the IvorNovelloAward for their single "Picture of You" to numerous SmashHitsAwards, including "Best Group" and "Best Haircut". They also hold the record for the best-selling ComicRelief album, with their reinterpretation of "When The Going Gets Tough" selling over 700,000 copies in the UK.
Since their debut, the Boys' Choir have set new chart records, becoming the first group ever to have 14 consecutive Top 3 singles and only the second group after the Beatles to have four consecutive albums go Gold in the UK.
The pop group performed a series of shows at Dublin's Point Theater in 2000, when they suddenly split due to discord between members. They were considered a major pop band in the 1990s and competed extensively with British boy band TakeThat, selling even more singles than they did. Steven and Ronan Keating were responsible for the vast majority of the vocals.
Boyzone ample at the 2008 Meteor Awards in February 2008 and toured throughout 2008. After his death, manager Louis Walsh described Gately as "the glue in Boyzone who brought them all together." Keating told the congregation at Steven's funeral that Steven nicknamed everyone in the group, "the campeststraightest group in the world"-Rosaleen (Ronan Keating), Michaela (Mikey Graham), Kitty (KeithDuffy), Shanice (ShaneLynch) and Stephanie (Steph herself).
Solo career
After Boyzone disbanded, Stephan decided to pursue a solo project. Steven released his debut single "New Beginning" on May 29, 2000, which reached number three on the UK Singles Chart.
Two weeks later, the album New Beginning was released and entered the charts. The album featured 12 songs, including the classic "BrightEyes."" NewBeginning" describes his talent and his journey as an artist over the past seven years, and is a personal and professional farewell to Steven's past as he stands at the beginning of his solo career, as he co-wrote the song with Simon Climie and Anders Bagge. Steven also co-produced the song with Sturken, Rogers and the legendary Steve Mac***, which is titled "New Beginning" and will be released on his debut album in June. Looking back on his seven years in the most successful boy band of all time, Steven gets more than just gratitude. "A lot of people didn't think we could break into markets outside of Ireland, we were confident that we could do it, but you can never imagine how far it will go and we were shocked when the Boys' Choir career started to take off, it was amazing! .
He recorded the soundtrack for the TV version of WatershipDown. He was also asked to voice the role of Blackavar on the show, a character drawn from his likeness. His character only lasted three episodes before becoming a background character.
The second single from the album was "I Believe", released on October 2, 2000, which was also the soundtrack to the film Billy Elliot. Unfortunately it missed the UK top ten, reaching number eleven. He attended the Edinburgh Film Festival and the premiere of the Empire Leicester Square movie, along with movie stars Julie Walters and Jamie Bell, and in May 2001, Gately's third single, "Stay", peaked at number 13 on the UK charts. His single was still on the charts that month, but unfortunately his record label, Polydor, fired him from their roster of artists.
Stephen recorded his last all-time single Childrenoftomorrow for the radio drama DoctorWho in 2007.
Boyzone (post-reunion)
Once the world-famous boyband Boyzone, Ireland's all-time most successful boyband, disbanded in January 2000 after a gap of eight years they have regrouped and returned with a new album, BackAgainNoMatterWhat/TheGreatestHits. Now that they're no longer boys, this is no longer the boy band it once was; it seems better to call it a man band.
Boyzone released a brand new single, "LoveYouAnyway," followed by a new compilation album in October 2008, and a second single, "Better," in December 2008. The second single "Better" was released in December 2008. The video for the song generated controversy because scenes depicting romantic couples included shots of two men embracing in an inclusive nod to Gately's homosexuality. The organization unanimously agreed that Gately should be allowed to pair up with male actors. which was condemned by the pastor of Dromore Reformed Presbyterian Church. However, others cited the milestone as one of the reasons Gately is a "gay rights hero. Wrote Tim Teeman of the Times Online, "Gately shows that a dishonorable guy can be a pop star and a homosexual. ...... The real shame should be reserved for the managers and showbusiness power brokers who practice such discrimination and discriminate against others."
At the time of Gately's death, the group chose 30 songs they intended to record for a new album to be released in 2010. And a BrotherTour world tour was held in Steven's honor.
Stephen's voice will be revived on Boyzone's final album (the Farewell Album) in a song called "ICanDream." The video for the song was released on June 15, 2018 and includes images of Steven and Boyzone. The album is set for a November 16, 2018 release.
For a number of reasons Boyzone will disband in 2019.
Acting career
Stephen took the lead role in Bill Kenwright's new work TimRice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's Joseph and AmazingTechnicolorDreamcoat, previewed in Oxford in December 2002, then traveling to Liverpool at Christmas 2002. Finally, it opened in February 2003 in London's West End and at the New London Theater, and from September 2004 to March 2005 the children's play ChittyChittyBangBang, played by Gayatri, opened at the LondonPalladium.

Stephen did his fairytale debut at the Churchill Theatre in Bromley in December 2005 starring in Dandini's Cinderella. in April 2006 he played the Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz at the Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury.
Stephen also took part in the Channel 5 All-Star Talent Show in October 2006, performing a slice and dice trick he had only had a week to learn, second only to TobyAnstis. He also took part in ITV's second DancingonIce, along with his dance partner Kristina Lenko. They were ranked on February 10, 2007 Eighth.
In January 2007, Steven was heard in GlamRock's horror film, a DoctorWho audio play produced by BigFinishProductions for BBC7. For this audio play, Gately recorded an original song Childrenoftomorrow, with music by Tim Sutton and lyrics by Barnaby Edwards; it was his first single since 2001.
In September 2007, Steven began an 11-week tour of Stephen Schwartz's rock musical Godspell, but dropped out of the production after only three weeks for contractual reasons.
In 2008, Steven appeared in the independent horror film "Credo", which was released in the US as Devil's Curse.
Charities
Steven is an Associate Patron of the charity MissingPeople (formerly the National Missing Persons Helpline ) associate patron, supporting their Missing Helpline service for young people. He was an ambassador for Stoke's Caldwell Children's Charity and on one occasion held a private Christmas show which raised thousands of pounds. Stephen's family asked fans who remembered Stephen to donate to the charity rather than in giving them flowers. This in turn added thousands of pounds. During a visit to a hospital he met a terminally ill child who envied the jacket he was wearing and Stephen gave it to the girl.
Writing career
For three years before his death, Stephen was writing a children's fantasy novel called The Tree of Seasons. In an interview with the Press Association in April 2009, he claimed he was close to finishing it, had publishers interested and hoped to release it by Christmas 2009.Boyzone teammate Ronan Keating promised at Stephen's funeral that the book would be completed "with the help of the writers".
The TreeofSeasons is the first children's fantasy novel to be published in the UK.
TheTreeofSeasons was written in collaboration with June Considine and Jules Williams and is based on Gade's original handwritten manuscript, which was just about finished in its first draft on the day he died. The book was released in the UK and Ireland on May 13, 2010, published by Hodder&Stoughton. It contains forewords by EltonJohn and David Furnish, and is performed by Keith Wilson. The Tree of Four Seasons was one of the top ten bestsellers for three consecutive weeks. The paperback version was released in April 2011.
Unexpected death
Stephen died on the morning of October 10, 2009, local time, at his home in Puerto Andratx, Majorca. His body was found later in the morning. His death was later determined to be the result of pulmonary edema caused by an undiagnosed congenital heart condition.
Stephen and his partner Cowles spent the night at the Black Cat Club in Palma, the capital of Majorca. They returned to the man they had met with that night, Bulgarian Georgi Dochev.Dochev was staying in the spare bedroom. According to Dochev, he found Steven's body lying on the couch as he was preparing to leave. He called Cowles, who was sleeping alone in the couple's bedroom, after he made the discovery. However, Stephen's lawyer and family friend Gerald Kean insisted Cowles was the first person to find Stephen's body. Spanish police were warned by Cowles at 1.45pm after he had tried to help Stephen with cardiac resuscitation. Stephen was crouched in an awkward position on a sofa, wearing pyjamas. Police said they had no reason to believe the death was related to substance abuse such as drugs or alcohol and found no record of suicide or signs of violence. Gerald Kean, who is a spokesman for the Stevens family, said suicide had been ruled out, describing it as "just a tragic accident". Getty, who was Stephen's attorney throughout his career, told Ronan Keating that Stephen had died.
The members of Boyzone flew to Majorca on October 11, 2009, and the remaining members of KeithDuffy, Michael Graham, Ronan Keating and Shane Lynch issued a joint statement:
Our hearts are completely broken at the loss of our friend and brother Stephen. We have shared such wonderful times together over the years and look forward to sharing many more. Stephen was a beautiful man in body and spirit. He brightened our lives and the lives of his many friends around the world. Our love and sympathy goes out to Andrew and Stephen's family. We love you and will always miss you, 'Steo'.
An autopsy and toxicology test was performed Oct. 13, and this test showed Gately died of natural causes. He died of congenital heart disease. Toxicology also confirmed statements by Steven Mate Cowles that he had been smoking marijuana that night.
On October 16, accompanied by the four remaining Boyzone members, his body was taken from Majorca to Dublin and his funeral was held the next day at St. Lawrence O'Toole Church. The four surviving members of Boyzone had held a vigil in the church the night before. Thousands of fans, celebrities and politicians attended the funeral. The then Prime Minister of Ireland also attended the funeral. Fans traveled from Nottingham, South Africa and Taiwan to attend the funeral. He was cremated in a private ceremony later that afternoon. Stephen's coffin was brought into the church by members of his band and a eulogy was delivered by RonanKeating, during which he broke down in tears several times and apologized to the congregation.KeithDuffy was reminiscing: "He told LouisWalsh he was 5ft 7in. When he auditioned for Hobbit later, he said he was 5'3". But he was a real giant".MikeyGraham said Stephen told him only last week how much he liked Cowles, adding, "When he came out, he was finally himself". The funeral clashed with BertieAhern's niece's wedding while several of her guests defected to the funeral.
Reaction
Fans replied with messages of sympathy on Twitter and Facebook. Fans donated thousands of pounds to a Stoke-based children's charity, one of Stephen's approved charities. Google searches for "Stephen Gately" were said to be "exponentially rising" and stayed at the top of the list in the days after the singer's death. at the top, and was later identified as the most searched for topic on Google's UK site in 2009 for the stated search term. Boyzone's manager Louis Walsh said: "We're all completely devastated. I'm totally shocked. He and I were at an awards ceremony on Monday. We didn't know much about what had happened. I just heard about TheXFactor (the British TV talent show that Walsh is a judge on). We'll rally around each other this week. He's a great man. "Walsh pulled out of the XFactor's live results show on October 11, 2009, as a direct result of Stephen's death.SimonCowell addressed the issue at the start of the program. "It's really, really sad news and I want to send my condolences to the family, our thoughts are with Louise", he said. That version of the show attracted an "absolutely huge amount" of viewers, who were said to have been looking for an update on the singer's death.Walsh didn't appear on the second week of TheXFactor, which coincided with Stephen's funeral. -commented: "I never want to watch this show at home again. I've been going to yell at the TV all night" -Walsh was too sad.MyFirstTime, a stage show set for bandmate Keith Duffy, was canceled.Duffy, Graham, Keating, and Lynch, while bringing Gately's body home, could have on their bodies "76-09" tattoo (the year of Stephen's birth and death).
Irish boy band Westlife said: 'We were as shocked as everyone else. We met StephenGately when we first set out in 1998 and have seen him many times since then. He and the Boyzone lads paved the way for Westlife (Westlife were responsible for warming up the concert gap for Boyzone at the beginning of their career), and our thoughts are with Andy and his family, his friends, his legions of fans, and of course his bandmates Keith, Mikey, Shane and Ronan, who have been devastated by the loss of a truly beautiful person who has been devastated." . Former TaoiseachBertieAhern he said, "It's so sad, Boyzone and Stephen, they were both part of Irish life more widely than the last 15 years, so successful, so it's a huge, huge tragedy. He's 33 years old, 15 years top, a great musician and it's just a huge tragedy for Irish entertainment, Irish music and further afield." Martin Cullen, Ireland's Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism, paid tribute, "Stephen Gaitley was a gifted young man with a talent for singing that brought him great success as a member of Boyzone and as a West End star. The story about the making of his music and his death at such a young age is both a personal and professional loss." Andrew Lloyd Webber said it was "a great loss to the music world". Elton John said he and his partner David Furnish were "stunned" when they heard the news. KatherineJenkins harped on "Memories 2 Cherish" from one night to the next in the weeks leading up to his death. Stephen Fry described Gad's death as "a terrible shock". "It shouldn't have happened. It wasn't in the script," said music historian Paul Gambaccini.
British TV personality Paul O'Grady said he was "haunted" by Stephen's death and decided to return to ITV from Channel 4 during a phone call with Louis Walsh, during which they discussed Gaiter's death.Bono later paid tribute to U2's U2360° Tour Global Concert by paying tribute to Stephen's tribute.
Daily Mail article
An article by Jan Moir in the Daily Mail on October 16, 2009, claimed: "Healthy 33-year-old men not only have to climb into their pyjamas, they also have to make up for it by sleeping on the sofa or never waking up again. Whatever the cause. Death is, and it's not by any standard, natural. "She believes Stephen's death will be blamed on drugs and "dangerous lifestyles".
Moir's article was the subject of more than 25,000 complaints to the Press Complaints Commission (PCC) on the same day, causing its website to crash for several hours.DerrenBrown and Stephen Fry used Twitter throughout the afternoon to launch an online campaign targeting the Daily Mail and JanMoir, as well as setting up a Facebook page. urging fans to complain to brands whose ads appeared alongside articles. "I gather a disgusting no one wrote in an essay that no any any one would be considered dead and wrote something disgusting and inhumane", Fry wrote. "If Gaitley's delivery leads to the kind of gutter journalism being held accountable today, we might be able to take it as a tribute", Brown wrote. Father Ted and IT Crowd writer Graham Linehan called for a complete boycott of the Daily Mail, tweeting "Which brands advertise in the Mail? Are they aware of Jan Moore's work? ...... What will they do?" Details of the companies that advertised on the page where Moir's article appeared were posted on a specially created Facebook page called "Daily Mail should retract Jan Moir's hateful, homophobic article". False rumors were repeated on Twitter based on the Guardian's details of Moir's place of residence posted on the internet and the Daily Mail's report of Cowles as Gaiter's murderer.
The story became so serious for retailer Marks&Spencer that it asked the newspaper to remove advertisements for its services from anywhere near the article, and the company issued a statement saying "Marks&Spencer does not tolerate discrimination of any kind". Nestlé also disapproved of the article, saying Moore's words contradicted the company's values of "mutual respect and tolerance, regardless of culture, religion or nationality". The company's Nescafé brand was displayed alongside the article.
The Daily Mail then removed all advertisements from the online version of the article. The publication also attempted to change the original headline, but this only succeeded in further galvanizing the public. Moore responded to the controversy by criticizing what she claimed was "clearly an orchestrated Internet campaign" and said that "extreme mischief suggests that my article has homophobic and bigoted overtones."
The Guardian "trumpeted Charlie Brooker while 'fighting to absorb the sheer scope of the abominable idiocy' by accusing her of 'dancing' at Gayatri's grave when he was even buried. Caitlin Moran's Times article was described as 'vile'. The editor of Attitude, a British gay magazine, questioned why Moore linked Gaitley's death to the recent suicide of comedian Matt Lucas's ex-partner, asking "if that's not homophobia, what is?" "The Daily Telegraph's Damian Thompson said Moore "The council contacted the Gately family and investigated whether they had received a formal complaint from them, but said they were unable to act directly on complaints from members of the public. a PCC spokesman said: "We are trying to find out what the complaint is. Offensiveness is not within the PCC's remit - we deal with accuracy and intrusion." However, the column, which only ran in the UK edition of the paper, was removed from the Irish Mail and replaced with a positive contribution to the singer's life. According to Sky News, Stephen's family said they were aware of the article but they had not read it, they would not read it but they were aware of what it contained and they were emotionally very disappointed."
In Ireland itself, former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern said "Some newspapers are waiting to write sensationalist articles about him I will never understand why people don't simplify things" and a radio shopkeeper called on people to write to the Mail to express their dissent, commenting: "We are all very insulted by this kind of reporting. I certainly hope the Irishman forces the editor of the paper to apologize for this injury caused by the article." Scotland Yard received the complaint. Stephen's record label also lodged a complaint with the PCC. the PCC did not uphold the complaint and said, "It found that the article caused some offense but there was insufficient evidence to prove that it breached the law." Tony Connell, a lawyer working on complex cases for the CPS in London, said: "In reaching this conclusion, I am particularly concerned about Article 10 of the Human Rights Act, which protects an individual's freedom of expression. This freedom applies equally to established legal principles. The fact that the Complainant and many others found the article offensive does not make its publication an unlawful message or idea.
