Biography

He's one of the many myths of Formula One, the 'Iceman' with the dark blue eyes, the driver who was born to drive. Kimi Raikkonen. Raikkonen, a talented driver from the snowy country of Finland. As Schumacher's successor, Raikkonen is regarded as the leader of the "post-Schumacher" era. He is shy and quiet on the surface, but inwardly he is determined and persistent, just like the icebergs standing in Finland. Let's take a look back at the development of the "Iceman" Raikkonen. Let's see how a genius is made.

Golden childhood

Raikkonen was born in 1979 in Lappilanta, Finland, where his father was a road worker and his mother was a government employee. From a very young age, R?ikk?nen had a keen interest in locomotives, and he and his older brother Rami, who is two years older, always took advantage of adults not paying attention to sneak up on their father Matti's construction vehicle, hand in hand, screaming and having fun.

At the age of eight, Keamy's grandfather assembled a small go-kart for Keamy and his brother Rami, where the two youngsters got their first drives. When their grandfather was away, the brothers followed their father, Marty, to work. Marty was responsible for driving the heavy road machinery, and every now and then R?ikk?nen and Rami took their "road roller" out of the car and drove it to help their father work hard on the finished road. It was a childhood experience that would serve Raikkonen well in his future racing career.

Raikkonen is extremely talented in sports, racing, skiing, hockey, soccer, running, motorcycle, golf and so on, he loves almost every sport, and in the middle, racing is undoubtedly his favorite.

In 1988, at the age of 10, R?ikk?nen and his brother took part in a local children's go-karting competition, and three years later, the R?ikk?nen brothers joined the Finnish national go-karting junior class. 1993, R?ikk?nen's talent for racing became apparent, and he finished 9th in that year's race. The following year, Raikkonen beat a number of older competitors to take 2nd place.

First steps

Raikkonen began racing in Formula A in 1995, winning the first race in a row. A year later, R?ikk?nen expanded his territory to Europe and the rest of the world, competing in the Grimpen European Series, the World Championships and Nordic Championships, the Formula A Finnish Championship, the Finnish Karting Championship, and European Karting, among other international races, and by 1998 he had won virtually all of them.

Early in 1999, Raikkonen competed in four races for HAYWOOD RACING in the Formula Renault Championship, where he started by finishing third, but was unable to take part in the last three races due to engine failure. After signing with MANOR MOTOR SPORT, he won all 4 races of the Formula Renault Winter Series.

The year 2000 was arguably Raikkonen's lucky year. It was the year he won the British Renault 2000 Championship for MANOR. The young Raikkonen*** won seven races in the 10-stage event, which included seven starts and six fastest lap records. Meanwhile, he claimed two more stage wins, two more starts and two fastest laps in the European Formula Renault Championship.

On the podium, Raikkonen's ice-blue eyes mesmerized fans. The "Finnish Iceman" was born!

Small anecdote

Raikkonen's first four-wheeler was built by his father from scrapped factory waste, but Raikkonen wasn't too happy with the car, which was red (interestingly, Raikkonen is now at Ferrari), and painted it black himself.

Whatever Raikkonen's level of English, the F1 industry has been very critical of Raikkonen's speech, with many drivers comparing Raikkonen's tone-deaf "Rai dialect" to "penguinese". The truth is that Raikkonen has not been very talkative since he was a child. The Finn didn't speak until he was three years old, and Raikkonen's parents even took their son to a child psychologist because of his lack of speech. The doctor's diagnosis was, "Your son has a very high IQ, and he would probably prefer to keep his mouth shut a lot of the time as a result." And here's what Raikkonen had to say about his eloquence, "I'm not in F1 to talk, I'm in F1 to race."

Raikkonen is calm in the car, but sleepy before a race. In the first race of his career, 40 minutes before the start, the team personnel were surprised to find Raikkonen still sound asleep, and when they woke him up, Raikkonen's response was, "Let me sleep for another five minutes." Raikkonen finished sixth in that race. In addition, McLaren mechanics had found him sleeping on the track's concrete barrier on a day when the sun was still high.

After winning a race, Raikkonen does not celebrate in any particular way; he usually just gives a token wave to the crowd, or at best stands on his car and raises his hands. When standing on the podium, Raikkonen is never quite at peace, his routine consisting of flipping the brim of his hat, rubbing one foot against the other pant leg or giving a thumbs-up to the team staff on the stage. He won't kiss the trophy, always saving the first sip of champagne for himself.

Raikkonen pulled out of the Spanish Grand Prix due to an electrical system failure, but his teammate Felipe Massa won. Raikkonen was the only one missing from Ferrari's post-race family photo shoot, and afterward, Raikkonen explained that he had gone back to watch the hockey game. "After I retired from the race, I asked the team if they could let me leave early because I wanted to go back to watch the Finnish team in the final of the World Ice Hockey Championship, and then the team said yes, which made me feel good. I don't know what's wrong with that."

Raikkonen doesn't like to talk about Schumacher, let alone compare him to him, but before Raikkonen stepped into F1, Raikkonen said the two drivers he admired most were Hakkinen and Schumacher.

Raikkonen doesn't like to carry a briefcase, and before the start of each race, he'll be sure to carry his own small school bag to the venue. When there are not many people, Raikkonen is willing to sign autographs for fans, but don't touch Raikkonen's little red bag, or he will push you away like a scared bird.

Raikkonen likes to have a drink now and then, but he doesn't see that as a big deal. "I'm a normal young man too, I have my life, I don't know what's wrong with that." Regarding criticism from the media, Raikkonen said, "Fortunately, I don't read newspapers and magazines too much. And I don't care what they say, it's not my job to make everyone happy, I'm happy with myself and that's enough."

[EDITORIAL] WHAT OTHER PEOPLE SAY ABOUT KIMI

David Robertson (Raikkonen's manager): As long as the car is good he's unbeatable

Looking back to this time last year, everyone was saying to us that it was the wrong decision (to join Ferrari) but the only one we believed in was Jean Todt. I trust him completely, I know how he works and he's the hardest working guy in the team, so next year if their car is still capable of doing what it did this year, Kimi will be unbeatable.

Honestly, Kimi is not at all worse than Alonso and Hamilton, and I'm not just saying that because I'm his manager, but it's true that only the best of the best can win the world championship. In the past, he could have won, but often retired, and if Ferrari hadn't had two mechanical problems this year, he would have won before we got to Brazil.

Adapting to new tires, a new team is a great job and Kimi has done a great job. Now there is a great British driver who will still grow (meaning Hamilton), but in my opinion he can't win the championship yet. And Kimi deserves to be champion because he was the best driver in the second half of the season. Monaco was the turning point of his season, and although he made a mistake there, he got used to the tires and since then he has become very confident. From Canada onwards, things went well. The team set up a training session for Kimi regarding the tires and they are indeed a great team!

Ross Brawn (former Ferrari technical director): Kimi reminds me of Michael

I'm very happy for Kimi Raikkonen because he had some trouble getting used to the new team, the new car and especially the characteristics of the Bridgestone tires.

But I was impressed by his cooperation with the engineers, his understanding of the problems, his mastery of the situation, and he reminded me of Michael because in this respect their styles are very similar. His second half of the season was superb.

It is clear that the changes made during the winter of 2006 caused some disruption to the continuity of the team as a whole, and it took some time for everyone to get used to the new regime, but in the end they proved to be more than a match for the company's expectations. The Ferrari team's motto is: "Non mollare mai", which literally means: "We never give up", and they are proving it. The team will learn from the mistakes they made and will definitely be stronger next season.

Now that Ferrari has the best driver in F1, they are well placed to build another best car.

McLaren CEO

What impressed me the most about Kimi's ability to be positive about everything is that he can get up from a fall very quickly, and that's something he's a hundred times better at than I am!

[EDITORIAL] ABOUT KIMI

If Ferrari is the surging power, then R?ikk?nen has to be the agile valve; if Ferrari is a bottle of luscious wine, then R?ikk?nen has to be the sensible cork; if Ferrari is the passionate blood, then R?ikk?nen has to be the calm brain. That's what the German Schumacher has managed to do, a dash of ice on red, the winning formula.

"I know what the world championship means, it means confidence, it means it has to come again." There was no turning back for the Iceman in the new season.

The double title hasn't made him change anything, and Raikkonen's principles are simple. "I will never change my lifestyle." He pointed this out bluntly to the Italian media at his first press conference when he joined Ferrari. And the Finn has no intention of learning Italian, "I'm not going to go to a language school, it's not like I joined Ferrari for that."

Raikkonen and Schumacher, big difference. Schumacher's first test drive at Ferrari saw the German discussing details with the team's technical team late into the night. For Raikkonen, on the other hand, the beginning and the end of the work is exceptionally clear: enter the race car to work on the beginning, step out of the race car to work on the end - the rest of everything, has nothing to do with himself! Of course, this has nothing to do with dedication either, it's the Raikkonen way. When I first arrive, it's clear what I'm going to do and what I'm going to be responsible for, first the little guy and then the big guy.

Raikkonen and Alonso are by no means similar in character, either, although they are both recognized worldwide for their talent. Alonso always wears his hair neatly short, a hairstyle that doesn't interfere with his vision. Although the Spaniard dislikes noisy parties, he has always behaved appropriately at the team's official events. Raikkonen stands as the antithesis of Alonso, the typical party animal who enjoys hysterical madness.

If there is a comparison to be made, perhaps the two men's musical preferences are closer to their essence: Alonso, who lives under the hot sun, enjoys Spanish folk music, while Raikkonen has a penchant for Eminem. Who gave Raikkonen the nickname "Iceman"? Is there a "Mr. Cool" who likes Eminem? But Ferrari doesn't care. No matter how passionate Raikkonen is in life, he will not surprise the Italians, the "southerners of Europe", but will trigger the feeling of "I feel the same way". All Ferrari needs is for Kimi Raikkonen to be the "ice neck" who can keep his head in the right place at the right time, make precise calculations when the moment arrives, stay calm in the nick of time, and let the passion flow most powerfully to accomplish the goal.

The Nürburgring in 2005 was the best illustration of the difference between Raikkonen and Alonso, something Ferrari has long seen. At the time, Raikkonen led all the way, with a staggering 20-second advantage at the most. But the Finn continued to set crazy speed records. With hard braking and sharp turns, the round wheels were worn out to the edges. Raikkonen never slowed down for a smooth cut into the corner, which meant the car's suspension had to be "strong". As the finish line came into sight, the right front suspension blew out and the right wheel flew off. But Raikkonen was unconcerned that his driving style might have been responsible for the demise of the race: "We have to beat him (Alonso), we need more points.

Of course, genius can be misbehaving and arrogant, and the Finn made just 23 races in Formula Renault before Sauber brought Raikkonen into Formula One in the fall of 2000. Raikkonen's first appearance was a test drive at the Mugello circuit, where he was given the most powerful car with 600 horsepower. "He drove just a few laps and I realized what I was getting - a talented driver that you don't see for 100 years!" Pete? Sauber would later recall the first impression Raikkonen made on him, always with the excitement of unearthing a treasure! In 2001, Raikkonen became an official Sauber driver, and another year later he became H?kkinen's successor at McLaren. Ferrari knew and appreciated Raikkonen's personality. As the leading F1 team, Ferrari needs to maintain the very essence of motorsport and its own distinctive personality, which is speed and passion. The smaller teams that have taken on the role of disruptors in the F1 world can be calculating and results oriented. Winning is important, but it's not enough. You have to win beautifully, you have to make miracles. That's what keeps the appeal alive. Look at the situation of Spanish soccer giants Real Madrid and Barcelona, and you'll understand why Kimi Raikkonen is Ferrari's favored number one driver. It's because only his extreme personality of ice and fire, as well as his strong personal charisma, can fulfill that requirement.

Ferrari CEO Jean? Todd said that while it is difficult to compare the talents of Raikkonen and Alonso, he nevertheless believes the former's personality is a better fit for Ferrari. "For the last five years, Kimi has been considered one of the most outstanding drivers. I will never understand people who will be disappointed with his performance in the first half of the season." From the first moment he landed in F1, Raikkonen's style has literally never changed for any motive. As much as his voracious appetite for engine power, his mental strength is stunning. Former McLaren team doctor Kinsale once said: "Even if a race performance is disastrous, he smiles just as charmingly as when he won it. He can completely erase the memory of defeat. As far as I've seen, many people have an excellent sense of space, but Raikkonen's perception of three-dimensional space is, without a doubt, the most exceptional." But when a reporter took the question to Raikkonen, the Finn simply said coldly: "He's just a team doctor, he doesn't know anything about racing."

As the smoke cleared from the 2007 season, Raikkonen had a whole new feeling. He needed time to get used to the new car. "The cockpit is a little bit unfamiliar, the car has had some revamping, we don't have the traction control anymore, so the car will be difficult to control in the rain." Having brought the title to Ferrari, Raikkonen still needs to conquer Maranello once and for all: in the post-Schumacher era, the Finn is the key to victory for the red leaper. "I can stay at Ferrari for two more years, and if I'm going to be constantly happy during that time, I'll stay here."

On September 30, 2009, Ferrari announced that it would be signing F1 World Champion and current Renault driver Alonso for the 2010 season. This meant that KIMI would be released from his contract at Ferrari a year early, and that we would no longer see the Finnish Iceman driving a red Ferrari on the track in the 2010 season. But as for KIMI's next employer, nothing has been decided yet.
