Defending the Yellow River-Chorus
But
O sons and daughters of the Chinese nation
Who would like to be like a pig or a sheep
To be slaughtered
We must be determined to win
Defending the Yellow River
Defending North China
Defending the whole of China
The wind roars
Horses cry out
The Yellow River roars
The Yellow River roars
The Yellow River roars
A thousand high
Horses are neighing
The Yellow River is roaring
The Yellow River is roaring
The mountains west of the river are ten thousand feet high
The sorghums east and north of the river are ripe
Amidst the ten thousand mountains
There are many heroes of resistance against the Japanese
In the green net
The guerrilla fighters show off their valor
They carry the clay and foreign guns
Wielding the big swords and spears. Wielding swords and spears
Defending our hometown
Defending the Yellow River
Defending North China
Defending all of China
The wind is howling
Horses are neighing
The Yellow River roars
The Yellow River is roaring
The mountains are 10,000 feet high in the west of the river
The sorghums are ripe in the east and the north of the river
In the mountains of ten thousand hills
The sorghums are ripe in the east and the north of the river
There are many anti-Japanese heroes in the mountains
In the green tent
The guerrilla fighters are heroic
Taking up the clay and foreign guns
Swinging the big swords and lances
Defending their hometown
Defending the Yellow River
Defending North China
Defending all of China
The wind howls
Horses cry out
Horses are neighing
The Yellow River is roaring
The Yellow River is roaring
West of the river, the mountain peaks are ten thousand feet high
East of the river, north of the river
The sorghum is ripening
Amidst the mountains
There are many heroes of resistance against Japanese invaders
In the green tent
The guerrilla fighters show off their heroic spirit
They are armed with clays and foreign guns. Foreign guns
Wielding swords and spears
Defending their hometown
Defending the Yellow River
Defending North China
Defending the whole of China

The Yellow River Cantata
is Xian Xinghai's most important and influential symphonic masterpiece. It was composed in March 1939 and rearranged in 1941 in the Soviet Union.
This work, with lyrics by the poet Guang Weiran, takes the Yellow River as the background, enthusiastically glorifies the glorious history of the Chinese nation and the strong and unyielding spirit of struggle of the Chinese people, complains bitterly about the brutality of the invaders and the deep disaster suffered by the people, shows the magnificent picture of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, and sends out the battle cry of national liberation to the whole world, so as to shape the titanic heroic image of the Chinese nation. The Chinese government has also been working on the development of a national defense system, which has been in place for a long time.
