Northeastern Thailand, also known as Ishan, is a plateau composed of red sandstone. It is extremely dry in summer and very muddy in rainy season. "Sheng" is a famous folk dance in northeastern Thailand, with 19 basic dance steps. "Sheng" originally means "to jump" and is the collective name for folk dance. Sheng dance represents rural life scenes such as farmers delivering rice in the fields, netting fish in river ponds, and picking wild vegetables. There are many types, such as Nanwang dance, fishing dance, bamboo basket dance, bamboo pole dance, etc. Sheng dance performance is free in form, smooth and free in steps, lively in rhythm, and humorous in performance. The content of the performance is mostly the working life and folk customs of the working people in the Northeast. The main instruments of the Sheng dance are reeds and percussion instruments. Male and female dancers dance and sing along with the accompaniment. The lyrics are very humorous and change their movements according to the rhythm of the small cymbals. The music rhythm speeds up towards the end, and it is exciting. The dance reaches its climax with the sound of drums and then stops abruptly. The costumes of the Sheng Dance are similar. Men usually wear a blue collarless long-sleeved shirt and a scarf on their head. Women usually wear a black or brown dress, a bun on their head, and white flowers.
