1, White Snake and Leifeng Pagoda
The legend of "White Snake" has a long history, and during the Qing Dynasty, the story of White Snake appeared to be in circulation with new contents, which are roughly as follows: in Zhenjiang City during the Song Dynasty. Bai Suzhen, a snake demon cultivated for a thousand years, in order to repay Xu Xian, a scholar, for saving her life in his previous life, took human form in order to repay her kindness, and then met Xiaoqing, a green snake spirit, and the two of them became companions.
Bai Suzhen exerted her magic power and trickery to get acquainted with Xu Xian and married him. After the marriage, Fa Hai, a monk of Jinshan Temple, told Xu Xian that Bai Suzhen was a snake demon, and Xu Xian was skeptical. Later, Xu Xian followed Fa Hai's advice and made Bai Suzhen drink wine with Xionghuang during the Dragon Boat Festival, and Bai Suzhen revealed her original form, but Xu Xian was scared to death. Bai Suzhen went to heaven and stole the herb Ganoderma lucidum to revive Xu Xian. When Fahai tricked Xu Xian into going to the Jinshan Temple and put him under house arrest, Bai Suzhen and Xiaoqing fought with Fahai and flooded the temple with water,
but they hurt other living beings as a result. After giving birth to her child, she was taken into Fa Hai's mantle and suppressed under the Leifeng Pagoda for violating the laws of heaven. Later, Bai Suzhen's son grew up and won the Scholarship, and went to the pagoda to sacrifice his mother, rescuing her and reuniting the family.
2. Jinshan Temple and Leifeng Pagoda
According to Feng Menglong's "A Cautionary Tale", Xu Xian and the White Maiden met Zen Master Fa Hai of Jinshan Temple after they opened a pharmacy by the pier in Zhenjiang. This brings Zen Master Fa Hai into the legend. However, Feng Menglong's Fa Hai seems to be a "positive character", with the intention of doing justice to heaven. Maybe it is because of the progress of the times, today's impression of the Fa Hai is completely a bad thing to do all the characters of the opera.
Jinshan Temple in the northwest of Zhenjiang Jinshan, was built in the Eastern Jin Dynasty, the temple buildings and platforms built on the mountain, to the famous Buddhist Zen temple in China. Fa Hai is also said to be true. Historically, Zhenjiang and Hangzhou contacts are quite frequent.
