The storyline of Overwatch is set in the early 1920s, when humans designed intelligent machines (referred to as Smartarms) created by artificial intelligence, which were designed to enhance production and create economic prosperity in the world. However, the unthinkable happens as the Smartmachines become filled with malice and begin to mass produce military robots in an attempt to destroy humanity.
Governments failed to stop the attack of the Intelligent Machines, so the United Nations created an international peacekeeping organization to fight back against the Intelligent Machines. The organization, which brings together the world's best and brightest, is named "Watchmen," and its story revolves around an asymmetrical war against an army of robots.

As a first-person shooter, Overwatch adds the concept of heroes, and also customizes the hero's role. The game is not like a traditional FPS game where you can use your gear freely, but each hero's gear is customized and unchangeable. Each hero has his or her own unique skin, voice, movement, pose, paint job, dance expression, and close-ups.
As players continue to complete matches, win or lose, they will gain experience and upgrade. After each upgrade, players receive a supply of up to four cosmetic items or in-game currency, categorized as white, blue, purple, or gold.
