In a big city, there is a boy called Ghai, a girl called Gerda, their homes are connected, is very good friends, in the winter when the snowflakes flying a night, Ghai suddenly saw outside the window there is a very large snowflake drifting down on the bridge, the more bigger and bigger, and finally turned into a woman, she wore a white snow cloak, the body emits a shining light, two eyes also glittering, she Waving to Gaj, Gaj hurriedly lowered his head, the heart is very afraid, at this time, she flew away, to be the winter passed, one day Gaj went to find Gerda, the two people look at the picture book together, outside the bell rang, Gaj put his head out of the window, with the wind flying pieces of the mirror fell into his eyes, drilling into his heart, the good Gaj immediately turned into a heartless person, his heart turned into ice, from then on, he will never be with the Gerda well, and often bullied and mocked her.

Another snowy winter came, poor Gerda because of Gaj ignore her at home and sad crying, and Gaj is carrying a sled to go to the square skiing, at this time, a sledge sliding past Gaj's side, the sledge on the person on the Gaj smiled, it turned out that she was that night the whole body glittering with white light, very famous ice queen. Her hat and boots were all made of snow, and the Snow Queen said to Ghai, "Come on! Come and get warm in my fur coat." Gaj got into the Ice Queen's leather coat and she kissed Gaj on the head and said, "Now you're not cold, are you?" He felt the Ice Queen's kiss like a piece of ice on his heart and he forgot all about it. The Snow Queen made him sit on the sledge and took him flying into the sky with her.

Spring came, and Ghai followed the Snow Queen, and everyone thought that he might be dead, and so did Gerda, and so she cried even more, but the swallows and the sun thought that Ghai had only gone to a faraway place, and that he might not be dead, and so one morning Gerda put on her favorite red shoes, and decided to set out in search of Ghai, and she came to the edge of the town, and sat down on a little boat, and she threw her red shoes into the center of the river to give to the the river and asked the river to take her to look for Gaj. Soon the boat took her to a big cherry orchard with a thatched roof house in which lived an odd-looking old witch. Gerda told the old witch about her search for Gaj, and the witch asked Gerda not to be too sad and took her in for a few days. On the next day, the witch hoped that Gerda wouldn't be too sad and so she cast a spell so that she could forget all about it.

One day, Gerda saw the roses on the witch's hat and remembered that she had told Gaj that she would knit roses for him herself, so she went to ask the rose in the garden if it knew where Gaj was. The rose said it didn't know, but it was sure that Gaj wasn't dead, because he wasn't buried under the ground, Gerda decided to escape from the cherry orchard, when she escaped, she realized that it was already fall, she didn't even have her shoes on, and she felt pain in her feet, but she had to find Gaj fast anyway!

The winter snow was already half a foot thick, and Gerda was cold and tired, when she met a crow, so she asked the crow if he knew where Ghai was. The raven told her, "Ghai had a big wedding because he answered the right question of the princess of the palace, and now he is a prince." So Gerda asked the raven to take her inside the palace, only to find that the prince was not Gaj. The princess, because she sympathized with Gerda, gave her a carriage made of gold, a pair of thick gloves, and a coachman and a team of attendants, Gerda rode in the carriage, and when she went through the thick woods, the robbers who hid behind the rocks found the golden carriage, and they defeated all of them, and the leader of the robbers was a tall and fat female robber, and just as she was about to kill Gerda, the youngest daughter of the robbers begged for mercy and spared Gerda's life.

So they got into the wagon together and drove toward the robber's cave, where there were a hundred pigeons perched on wooden planks, and two birdcages hanging from the top of the cave, in which were two pairs of flower-doves, and a big reindeer leaning out of the corner of the cave, and Gerda spoke to the little girl about looking for Ghai, and on the next day the little daughter wondered how she was going to persuade the robbers to let Gerda go and look for Ghai, when one of the flower-doves said suddenly : "Coo-coo, I know where Ghai is; I saw Ghai sitting on the sledge of the Snow Queen, flying northward, and probably on an island in the Arctic Ocean." So the little girl and Gerda went and asked the reindeer how to get there, and the reindeer said, "To get to the Snow Queen's palace you must first go to Lapland." So the little girl made the robbers drunk, and took two loaves of bread and a large piece of ham to Gerdahl, and told her to sit on the reindeer and run away quickly, and the reindeer ran through the ice and snow, and the Northern Lights in the distance sent out blue flames like lightning, and when the grain was finished they reached Lapland.

Gerdahl and the reindeer came to a small house and stopped, there was an old woman in the house, the reindeer told her about Gerdahl, and she asked them both to eat something, for it was more than fifteen hundred miles to the palace of the Ice Queen, where there was a place called Finnmark, where the Ice Queen was on vacation, and where she radiated the blue flames of the Aurora Borealis every day, and the reindeer departed before the old woman Before the reindeer set out, the old woman took out a bundle of dried codfish rolls, wrote some words on them, and tied it to the reindeer's back, and they waved goodbye to the old woman, and soon arrived at Finnmark, and came to the Finnish woman's house, which was very hot, and the woman opened the codfish rolls and read them, and then she boiled the dried codfish and ate them, and Gerda asked the woman if she knew the whereabouts of Gaj. The woman said, "Ghai is in the palace of the Snow Queen, because he has a shard of the mirror in his heart and a shard of crumbs in his eyes, so he can't look at anything, only by taking out the shard can he become a real person, otherwise he will have to stay in the palace of the Snow Queen forever, you have the innocent and kind heart of a child, that's your strength, from here to the palace it's only six miles, quickly let the reindeer take you there!" The reindeer took Gerda to a clump of bushes in the snow, and let Gerda go forward on her own; and Gerda stood in the wintry wilderness, and the snowflakes kept coming at her, and attacked her in strange shapes, for they were the warriors of the Snow Queen, and were guarding the palace! Gerda's spirit touched God, and God sent the angel Angel to help her defeat the snowflake warriors.

The Ice Queen's palace was very large, everything was made of ice and snow, and it shone like clear glass, and there was a frozen lake in the hall, which was the world's lake of sanity, and the Ice Queen sat in the center and watched all the things that happened in the world.

Gaj was playing with a jigsaw puzzle not far from the queen, his face had frozen and was giving off a greenish-black color, and the Ice Queen said to Gaj, "If you can spell the word 'Eternity', you are your own true master, and you are free." After saying her words, the Ice Queen flew away to hurry to cool down the volcano, Gerda walked into the palace and recognized Gaj, Gerda was very happy and pounced on him, but Gaj was cold and unresponsive, Gerda cried sadly, her tears were like endless hot springs that flowed into Gaj's heart until the pieces of mirrors in her heart were melted away, at that moment, Gaj's eyes were moving and started to look at Gerda, the Gerda then sang what used to be Gaj's favorite song, "When the roses bloom, we see God." When Ghai heard the song, he suddenly cried out, and the hot tears melted out of the splinters in his eyes. He finally recognized Gerda, and they hugged each other so tightly that even the ice around them danced for them in joy, and when they lay down in exhaustion, the two of them just formed the pattern of "eternity". Ghai was now free! He took Gerda's hand and together they walked out of the Snow Queen's palace to find the reindeer waiting for them. The reindeer took them to the Finnish woman's house and then to the old woman in Lapland, who had prepared new clothes and a new sled for them, and they said goodbye to the old woman with thanks and started home.

Spring came, and Gerda and Gaj returned home, and they held hands and sat together on the little bridge, feeling very happy.
