South Korea's S.M. Entertainment announced through their official website on August 24, 2009, the debut of Asian Pop Dance group F (X)'s video for their debut digital single "La Cha Ta".
SM said, "This is SM's first ever 5-member girl group, with an average age of only 16.6 years old, and they will be showcasing more dynamic music and dance than previous girl groups." The group consists of Victoria (Chinese), Amber (Chinese American), Sulli (child actress), krystal (Girls' Generation Jessica's biological sister), and Luna. s.M. Entertainment explains the meaning of the name: "Like the value of f(x) is different based on the value of x S.M.Entertainment explained the meaning of the name, "Just like the value of f(x) is different depending on the value of x, f(x) is able to show a wonderful stage not only in Korea but also in Asia based on the diverse talents and charisma of each of the members." She then added, "f is the abbreviation for flower, and x is the female chromosome symbol xx. I hope that f(x) will grow into a super popular idol group that represents Asia."
