Life from a biological point of view:
Life, in general, refers to a class of semi-open material systems that are characterized by a stable metabolism of matter and energy, and that are capable of responding to stimuli and reproducing themselves (reproduction). Simply put, it is an object that consists of a living mechanism. Living individuals are usually born, grow and die. Populations of life evolve through natural selection as individuals change from generation to generation to adapt to their environment. Biology, on the other hand, is a science that centers on the study of life.
The smallest unit of life is the organism, which consists of one or more cells that can metabolize, maintain constancy, grow, respond to stimuli, reproduce, and even evolve to adapt to the external environment, continue to reproduce, and produce offspring. Many different organisms can be found within the Earth's biosphere, and among these organisms (including plants, animals, fungi, protists, archaea, and bacteria), all share the **** same characteristics of being made up of carbon- and water-based cells with their organization and genetic information that can be inherited.
Life from the point of view of natural phenomena:
Any phenomenon that has "birth, growth, decay and death" can be called life. It can be a group, building, wind, rain, lightning, behavior (such as the current street dance square dance), thought and so on.
Of course there is also a sci-fi perspective on life:
It is possible that the universe as we see it now is life nested in life, and then nested in multiple layers of life. Life in particle clusters made up of atoms and electrons and so on is contained by cellular life while at the same time being contained by tissue and organ life, and the tissue and organs make up plant and animal life. The plant and animal life in turn lives on the earth as a life form. How do you know that this earth life form is not the super giant cell life form that makes up this universe we see along with the sun, moon and stars? How do you know that this super giant cell life is not part of the larger plant and animal life?
Fantasize like this and you can come up with no end of results. Good luck in finding an answer that satisfies you.
