Luxi City on the China-Burma border will be renamed "Mangshi"
KUNMING, July 23 (Xinhua) -- A reporter from the government of Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan Province was informed by the State Council of the People's Republic of China that the city of Luxi, which is the capital of Dehong Prefecture, has been formally approved by the State Council of China and has been renamed as Mangshi. Luxi City is a county-level city in Dehong Prefecture, neighboring Myanmar, with a total population of 370,000 people from six ethnic groups: Dai, Jingpo, Deang, Achang, Lisu and Han. Mangshi is a township under Luxi City. The word "Mangshi" first appeared in the Zhengtong period of the Ming Dynasty. According to "A Brief History of the Tusi of Mangshi", the scope of jurisdiction at that time "started from Stone Mountain in the east, and was bounded by the Nu River in the northeast, including Menglang, Pingjia, Xiangda and other places. In the south to Mengya, Mengpan and other places, and in the west to the intersection of Yuleng River and Mangshi River." The name of Mang City began here and has been used ever since. In the region, "Mang" also means "ethnic unity and harmony". In fact, the popularity and reputation of "Mangshi" at home and abroad are far greater than that of "Luxi". In particular, the World War II Western Yunnan War and the Sino-Burmese Border People's Celebration held in Mangshi under the auspices of Premier Zhou Enlai and Burma's Premier U Ba Shwe in 1956 made "Mangshi" a border town famous in Southeast Asia and all over the world. Mangshi Hotel, Mangshi Airport, Mangshi Hall, Mangshi Plaza and other such names have appeared in large numbers on the streets, which have made most foreign merchants only know Mangshi but not Luxi. Therefore, relevant experts and scholars and some officials suggested that the city of Luxi be directly renamed as Mangshi. Scholars believe that for thousands of years, "茫" and "芒市" have evolved from tribal names to place names used by all ethnic groups*** together, with the meanings of unity, harmony and solidity, condensing the spiritual wisdom of all ethnic groups. The name change can eliminate the confusion of geographical names, smooth the flow of people, logistics and information, and facilitate external publicity and enhance visibility. A survey report on 4,751 people in Luxi City showed that the support rate of 96.96% in favor of restoring historical names and renaming Luxi City as Mang City. On February 5, 2009, Luxi City officially started the renaming procedure. Recently, the State Council of China officially approved the renaming of Luxi City to Mangshi. At present, Luxi Municipality is working on the renaming process. Historically, Luxi City was the stronghold of the Southern Ancient Silk Road, and was the necessary place for the entry and exit of the Yunnan-Burma Highway, Stilwell Highway, and the China-India Oil Pipeline. With the construction of the western line of the Trans-Asian Railway, the China-Burma Oil and Gas Pipeline, and the China-Burma Land and Water Transportation Corridor, and the desire of Dehong to make the Mangshi Airport into an international aviation port, the renamed Mangshi City will have to be renamed as a new airport. By then, the renamed Luxi City will play a more important role in China's interaction with Southeast and South Asian countries. (End)
