About the origin of the Butterfly Spring, there are all kinds of explanations and magical stories circulating in the folklore. One of the stories is:

Butterfly Spring was originally called Bottomless Pond, and there lived a woodcutter, Mr. Zhang, and an orphaned girl, Ms. Wen, by the side of the pond. One day, the father and daughter went up the mountain to cut firewood, suddenly saw a wounded deer ran to fall down in the side of the Wen Gu, yu yu wailed. Soon after, a hunter with a bow and arrow came after him. Shizuku picked up the poor deer and begged the hunter not to kill it. The hunter's name was Xiarang, and he accepted Wen Gu's plea and gave her the deer as a gift. He took the powdered medicine out of his medicine pouch and put it on the deer to heal its wounds. Shizuku couldn't thank Kasuro enough. After that, they often met by the bottomless pool. Wen Gu also gave Xia Lang her "Hundred Butterflies" embroidered with a hundred butterflies as a token of love.

While in Dali City, King Yu had been coveting the beautiful Wen Gu for a long time. After his proposal was rejected, he snatched her away on the pretext that he wanted her to embroider a hundred butterflies in King Yu's residence. When Mr. Zhang came to her rescue, he was beaten to death by King Yu's soldiers. Witnessing this tragic scene, the humane deer immediately ran up the mountain to find Xiarang, biting his clothes and dragging him down the mountain. Xia Lang came to the bottomless pool, saw the last letter of Wen Gu, he first buried the old man, then he put on his bow and arrows, rode his horse and raised his sword to King Yu's residence. Taking advantage of the darkness of the night, Xia Lang rescued Wen Gu. When King Yu found out, he sent his general to chase after her. Xia Lang opened his bow and arrow, an arrow to the down a pursuer ...... helpless pursuer crowded, Xia Lang had to protect Wen Gu and retreat, and finally retreated to the edge of the bottomless pool. At this time, Xia Lang's arrows finished, the knife also cut off. When there was no way to escape, Xia Lang and Wen Gu jumped into the bottomless pool with each other in their arms, and the deer also jumped into the pool to die for their master. Strangely enough, just as they jumped into the pool, the sunny sky suddenly changed to lightning and thunder, and a torrential downpour of rain scared away King Yu's chief and soldiers.

After the rain cleared up, the birds and flowers began to sing, and a pair of big colorful butterflies flew up in the pool, followed by another pair of colorful butterflies. Legend has it that they are the butterflies from the "hundred butterfly leaves" that Xia Lang, Wen Gu and Xiao Deer Xiang Xia Lang carried with them.

In honor of Xia Lang, Wen Gu, people not only change the name of the bottomless pool to Butterfly Spring, but also on the 15th day of the 4th month of the calendar, when they jumped into the pool and died in love, they went to the spring to pay homage to the memory of this pair of strong and unyielding lovers.
