Diet

Peritoneal dialysis patients

Normal kidneys remove excess water, salt and other minerals. If kidney failure, filtration function is reduced, although dialysis can replace part of the work of the kidneys, but if the peritoneal dialysis patients consume too much water, salt, etc., the fluid will accumulate in the body, resulting in weight gain, increased blood pressure, edema and even chest tightness and breathlessness, etc., and the burden on the heart increases.

Dietary considerations

① Limit water intake: It is not the only thing that increases water intake is drinking water. Liquid foods contain a lot of water, such as various porridges, soups, ice creams, fruits and vegetables such as melons, grapes, cucumbers, apples and lettuce.

② Control of sodium intake: intake of large amounts of sodium will be thirsty, leading to excessive water intake, increased blood pressure. To strictly limit sodium, fry less salt and seasoning (chili sauce, bean paste, pepper, etc.), eat less processed foods such as sausage, ham sausage, cured meats and so on.

③ Potassium appropriate intake: abdominal dialysis patients with low blood potassium is easy to induce peritonitis, can be appropriate to eat potassium-containing food . High potassium can trigger cardiac arrhythmia, to avoid a short period of time a large number of intake of food containing high potassium, such as yellow skinned fruits, kiwi, strawberries, oranges and green leafy vegetables.

④ Control the intake of phosphorus: Grain, nuts, beans, liver and chocolate are rich in phosphorus . High phosphorus can lead to itchy skin and increased bone disease. Patients with abdominal dialysis should eat a low phosphorus diet, or chew calcium carbonate with meals, and take calcium-free phosphorus binding agents such as Silram or lanthanum carbonate to control blood phosphorus levels.

⑤ High-quality protein intake: 40-66% of patients with abdominal dialysis suffer from malnutrition, and moderate to severe malnutrition increases the complications of abdominal dialysis, and a small amount of protein is lost with each abdominal dialysis, protein-rich foods such as pork, beef, and lamb, chicken, fish, and eggs.

⑥ Water control tips: suck on ice instead of drinking water; chew gum or suck on hard candy; eat cool, low-potassium fruits such as frozen grapes; and rinse your mouth with water but don't swallow it.

Choose suitable exercise

① Aerobic exercise-exercise cardiorespiratory function, such as walking, jogging, square dance, cycling, playing table tennis and so on. Swimming is not suitable for patients with abdominal dialysis, easy to external mouth or tunnel infection, and even peritonitis.

② resistance exercise - strong muscles, with the help of weights, fitness bands or weight-bearing equipment, such as weight 500-1000ml water bottles.

③ Stretching - to move muscles and joints, such as tai chi, eight duan jin, and so on.

④ Daily exercise also improves strength and cardiorespiratory function, such as short-distance walking, housework or gardening.

Stop exercising and seek immediate medical attention if you have any of the following conditions!

① Pain or pressure in the chest, arms, throat, jaw or back.

② Nausea or vomiting.

③ Extremely rapid heartbeat.

④ Difficulty breathing, dizziness, or fainting.
