"Shanghai Tang" is a song sung by Yip Lai-yee, composed by Koo Ka Fai, with lyrics by Wong Chim, and included in Yip Lai-yee's album of the same name, Shanghai Tang, released in 1980. It is the theme song of the TV series Shanghai Tang starring Chow Yun-Fat and Gigi Chiu.
In 1980, the song won the Third Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs Award.
Background:
White Jim said that the inspiration for the song came from his experience of diarrhea, and the lyrics "Waves run, waves flow, ten thousand miles of the river will never stop" came out of it. Huang Zhan was in a hurry when he wrote the song, and since there was no fax machine, he worked with Gu Jiahui on the phone. Gu Jiahui sang the tune over the phone, and then Huang Zhan had to sing it to him once after transcribing it to see if there were any mistakes; but Huang Zhan finished the lyrics in just 20 minutes.
The song is a beautiful song, with strong highs and lows, and Yip Lai-yee's rich, exuberant voice sings of the Shanghai Bund's tumultuous battles and bittersweet feelings. There is a lot of emotion hidden in Shanghai Bund, and you can hear the sounds of home and homeland in this song, as well as taste the unique flavors of life in the song.
