Yi language belongs to the Tibeto-Burman language family of Sino-Tibetan language family. Yi language is a syllable language, which was formed more than six thousand years ago. There are six dialects in modern Yi language. Yi originally had a syllable called Wen, Shu or Luo Tan, Bi Mo and Xibo.

Commonly known as the old Yi language, the old Yi language has about 10 thousand glyphs, and there are more than 1000 commonly used ones. 1975 adopted the Yi language standard scheme and began to try it out in the Yi area of Sichuan.

Its distribution forms are scattered and small settlements, and the main settlements are Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan, Wei Chu in Yunnan, Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Bijie in Guizhou and Liupanshui. According to the statistics of the fifth national census in 2000, the population of Yi people is 7762286.
