The background of the creation of the small poplar

In 1982, lyricist Liang Shangquan was invited by his comrades to experience life in the Xinjiang Military Region. When he saw the green poplars along the highway, he was reminded of the warriors.

Later, Liang Shangquan went to the Hulunbeier Prairie in Inner Mongolia and the Daxing'anling forest area to experience life. On the Sino-Soviet borderline, the outposts stood tall, and the soldiers stood on guard like poplars on the borderline. He was thus inspired to write lyrics, and wrote the lyrics to "Little Poplar" on July 16, 1983, in Hulunbeier.

Sheng Mao, a composer who traveled with Liang, saw the lyrics and composed a song for it, but it failed to be sung. Soon after, Liang Shangquan published the lyrics in "Songs of the People's Liberation Army", and the composer Shengxin was y moved by them and composed the music for them, forming the final version of the song "Little Poplar".
