Which country is Lake Baikal located in?

Lake Baikal is in eastern Siberia, Russia. Located in the south of eastern Siberia, Russia, it is the largest and deepest freshwater lake in the world.

It is located between 5129 ′-55 46 ′ north latitude and10341′-109 57 ′ east longitude, and it is long and narrow, running northeast-southwest, only1/kloc from the border of Mongolia. The average depth is 744 meters, the deepest point is 1637 meters, and the lake is 456 meters above sea level, in a crescent shape, with a total storage capacity of 23.6 trillion cubic meters.

Lake Baikal is also salty, but due to a large amount of rain and river water flowing into Lake Baikal, the lake water gradually becomes weak. Some marine life living in salt water gradually adapted to the fresh water environment of Lake Baikal.

Extended data

Geologically, Lake Baikal is a valley-broken depression, and it is a big crack as deep as 15-20km underground. Lake Baikal and its catchment area are unique geological systems in the world.

The topography on both sides of the valley at the bottom of Lake Baikal is asymmetric, with steep slopes in the west and gentle slopes in the east. 8% of the lake bottom is very shallow, only 50 meters deep. The winding coastline is 2080 kilometers long, and there are large depressions in Balguzin Bay, Chivilkusky Bay and Proval Bay, as well as Ayaya Port and Floriha Port.

There are 336 rivers flowing into Lake Baikal, with a basin area of 560,000 square kilometers. Selenger River provides more than 50% of the lake, forming an area of nearly 700 kilometers at the entrance of the lake. The largest lake delta in the world.

The Selenger River originates from the south of Kusugur Lake in Mongolia. In the Tang Dynasty, it was translated into Xian 'e River and Xian 'e River in China, and in the Yuan Dynasty it was translated into Xuelingge River. It is formed by the confluence of the Ider River and the Mullen River. The river flows northeast and joins the Erhun River in sukhbaatar. Hereinafter referred to as the Serenger River, it continues to flow northward, enters Russia, turns east, and reaches Ulan-Ude, the capital of Buryatia.

From here, the river flows north to Tattolo Waugh, then turns west, flows through a delta and flows into Lake Baikal.
