Sing for the Motherland

Sing for the Motherland, composed in September 1950, is a famous patriotic song with lyrics and music by Wang Xin. After the song was published, it was widely sung because of its bright and majestic rhythms. In China's major flag-raising ceremonies and opening ceremonies (e.g., the flag-raising ceremony of the Olympic Games, the flag-raising ceremony of Tiananmen Square, etc.), Singing of the Motherland is often played as a flag-raising song before the appearance of the national flag or before the opening ceremony. The Central People's Broadcasting Station's "National News Broadcast" and "News and Newspaper Digest" also use it as the beginning song, and now the song has become the ceremonial song, opening or closing song for various major events in China, known as the "second national anthem".

Song Description

Singing of the Motherland

Singing of the Motherland is often performed as a flag-raising song at major flag-raising ceremonies and opening ceremonies in China (such as the flag-raising ceremony of the Olympic Games and the flag-raising ceremony of Tiananmen Square), and is often performed as a flag-raising song prior to the appearance of the national flag or before the opening ceremony. Before the opening ceremony, "Sing for the Motherland" is often played as the flag song before the national flag or the opening ceremony. The Central People's Broadcasting Station's "National News Broadcast" and "News and Newspaper Abstracts" also use it as the beginning song (in a different way: "News and Newspaper Abstracts" is to play the melody first, and then in the chorus has just been played by the announcer announcing: "The Central People's Broadcasting Station, it is now the time of the news and newspaper summaries program," while the melody continues to accompany the melody. while the melody continues to accompany it. The "National News Broadcast" is much more solemn: first played the melody, and then in the chorus just played by the male announcer broadcast call sign: "Central People's Broadcasting Station", followed by the female announcer again broadcast call sign, and finally the two *** with the name of the program broadcast -- "National News Broadcast" is the name of the program. -"National News Broadcast". At the same time, the melody continues to accompany the program until the end.) This is why it is called the "second national anthem".

Background

Wang Xin was born in 1918 in Dangkou Town, Wuxi County, Jiangsu Province, China, and was a keen musician. When he was 14 years old, he was apprenticed to a department store on Nanjing Road in Shanghai. After the July 7th Incident, he went to Yan'an, where he became Xian Xinghai's favorite student at the "Lu Yi" school.

On September 15, 1950, the eve of the first National Day, he went from Tianjin to Beijing to buy a musical instrument. On his return trip, he couldn't help but get off the bus and admire Tiananmen Square, which was covered by the golden evening sun. Looking up, a bright red flag fluttered high in the sunlight, making his heart pound. 32-year-old composer's inspiration suddenly appeared, "five-star red flag fluttering in the wind, how loud the victory song, singing our dear motherland, from now on towards prosperity and strength." Four lines of lyrics came out of his mouth. He boarded the train back to Tianjin, thoughts like flying, while singing and writing and beat, lyrics and sheet music almost at the same time gush pouring: "over the mountains, over the plains, across the rushing Yellow River Yangtze River ......"

< When his wife heard her husband finish the song, she couldn't help but scream. She simply hummed in the same voice with her husband, and Wang Xin finished writing the second and third paragraphs of the lyrics in one go overnight.

The song was premiered at Yew Wah Middle School, and then spread to Tianda University and Nanjing University. On the eve of the first National Day, Wang Xin meticulously copied the original manuscript of "Singing for the Motherland" and sent it to a newspaper for publication, but a week later the newspaper gave him a pot of cold water---returned the manuscript. Unconvinced and undiscouraged, he carved and printed his own songs and distributed them to passers-by. This backward way of dissemination was really effective at that time. In the spring of 1951, the song sheet was sent to the Beijing Workers' Choir, and in the summer, the Beijing radio station broadcasted the choir's recordings. 1951, on the eve of the National Day, Wang Xin received a phone call from Beijing, in which the secretary-general of the China Association of Music Societies (CAMS), Comrade Sun Shen, asked him, "There is a song called Singing of the Motherland, which is widely spread among the public, and it is said to have come out from Tianjin. Old Wang, you are the chairman of Tianjin Music Association, please help to find out who wrote this song, please send the lyrics and music to the Ministry of Culture of the Central Government." Wang Xin laughed: "It's not hard to find the right place. It's too much of a coincidence that you've found the right song --- the author of that song is me."

In September 1951, People's Literature and People's Daily published the lyrics of Singing of the Motherland, and then the Central Orchestra played Singing of the Motherland on the central radio station, and from then on, the song was spread both at home and abroad.

Lyrics

The standard version of Singing for the Motherland

The five-starred red flag flutters in the wind, and the victory song is so loud and clear;

Singing

Our beloved motherland, from now on towards prosperity and strength.

Singing of our dear motherland, from now on towards prosperity and strength.

Across the mountains, across the plains, across the rushing Yellow River and Yangtze River;

Wide and beautiful land, is our dear hometown.

Heroic people stand up! We are strong as steel in unity and love.

The five-starred red flag flutters in the wind, and the victory song is so loud and clear;

Singing of our beloved motherland, from now on we are moving towards prosperity and strength.

Singing of our dear motherland, from now on towards prosperity and strength.

We are industrious, we are brave, independence and freedom are our ideals;

How many sufferings have we overcome to get today's liberation!

We love peace, we love our hometown, and whoever dares to invade us will be called to perish!

The five-starred red flag flutters in the wind, and the victory song is so loud;

Singing of our beloved motherland, from now on towards prosperity and strength.

Singing of our dear motherland, from now on towards prosperity and strength.

The sun is rising in the east, the people*** and the country are growing;

Our leader Mao Zedong, guides the way forward.

Our life is rising every day, and our future is bright.

The five-starred red flag flutters in the wind, and the victory song is so loud;

In 1950, the third collection of Popular Songs published Wang Xin's Singing the Motherland, which was the first time the song was released, and gradually became popular among workers and students in North China. On September 15, 1951, the People's Daily published the Notice of the Ministry of Culture of the Central People's Government on Singing on the National Day, stipulating that in addition to singing the national anthem, "Singing of the Motherland" and "One Heart for All the World's Peoples" would be the basic songs to be sung on the National Day. The Ministry of Culture stated in the notice, "These two songs have been popularized, and are now slightly amended (the lyrics of the first song have been modified in several places, and the score of the second song has been modified in one place), and are published hereafter. The Central People's Radio Station and local people's radio stations will soon be teaching and singing these two songs. It is hoped that trade union organizations, workers' night schools, workers' clubs, farmers' associations, rural troupes, literary troupes, associations of musicians, music teachers in primary and secondary schools, students' associations in universities and high schools, troops, institutions, women's groups, youth groups, movie theaters, cultural centers, newspaper reading groups and other groups will be responsible for promoting the teaching of the songs. Publishing houses and mass publications everywhere are responsible for issuing and publishing them, and cultural and educational organs everywhere are responsible for organizing the above work, so that the people of the whole country may generally learn these two songs and sing them neatly and enthusiastically on the National Day."

In October 1951, at the meeting of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), Chairman Mao Zedong, when meeting Wang Xin, said, "Singing of the Motherland is good," and gave Wang Xin a set of Mao Zedong Selected Works which had just been published, and signed it for him as a memento. From then on, "Sing for the Motherland" became the chorus song of new China for all generations.

Specifically, the differences between Mr. Wang Xin's original version and the current standard version are: (1) "wide and beautiful land", "land" was originally " earth"; (2) "How many hardships we have overcome", "how many" was originally "all"; (3) " The sun is rising in the east", formerly "The sun is rising, ten thousand feet of light"; (4) "Independence and freedom are our ideals", formerly "Five thousand years of history is glorious and splendid "; (5) "Leader Mao Zedong guides the way forward", "guiding" was originally "pointing".

An article by Zhang Daoliang, published in the 9th issue of Hundred Years of Tide in 2007, describes an interview with Wang Xin. According to Wang Xin's recollection, it was the poet Ai Qing's opinion about the first two revisions. He had expressed his gratitude to Ai Qing in person. As for the last three revisions, Wang Xin himself could not remember clearly.

During the Cultural Revolution, the lyrics of Singing of the Motherland were heavily revised, with the original author Wang Xin also taking part in the revisions, and the title of the song was changed to Singing of the Socialist Motherland. After the Cultural Revolution, Wang Xin was once mistakenly considered a member of the Gang of Four, and Singing for the Motherland was shelved. It was not until 1980 that Hu

Yaobang said "Sing for the Motherland" should be sung, and inquired about it with concern to the person in charge of Wang Xin's Tianjin office. After Wang Xin's question was clarified, the Central People's Broadcasting Station (CPB) used the song as its morning broadcast from May of that year until now. The lyrics of "Sing for the Motherland" have also been restored to the original 1950s chorus version.
