Historical Origins

The standard ballroom dance originated from the ancient folk dance, and through the process of evolution of the pair dance, circle dance, line dance, and group dance, it has become a widely circulated social dance.

After the 1920s, the Royal Dance Teachers' Association of the United Kingdom standardized and organized the original "dance types", "dance steps", "dance posture", etc., and formulated the competition method, which began to form the international standard of ballroom dance, and held the first World Standard Ballroom Dance Championship in 1947 in Berlin, Germany. It has now developed into a highly artistic and skillful competitive program.

The predecessor of the China DanceSport Federation was the China DanceSport Association (CDSA), which was founded in 1991. In August 2000, the Chinese DanceSport Association held a congress in Beijing to hold a general election, which produced a new leadership structure. 2002 April, with the International DanceSport Federation being recognized by the International Olympic Committee, dance began to enter the world's comprehensive games.

In this situation, with the approval of the Party Group of the State General Administration of Sport and the Party Group of the Ministry of Culture, the China DanceSport Sports Association and the China Amateur Dance Athletic Association under the Ministry of Culture, after consultation, formed a final union to form the China DanceSport Federation, which was re-registered with the Ministry of Civil Affairs.

Style Characteristics

The competition is divided into two kinds of team and individual competitions, which are conducted according to the procedures of preliminaries (elimination rounds), rehearsals (selection rounds), semi-finals (qualification rounds) and finals (ranking rounds). The Team Competition consists of 8 pairs of male and female athletes from each participating organization, who will compete in order. The Individual Competition is divided into Professional and Amateur groups with different requirements. There are also different regulations on the types of dances to be competed. The competition field is 23 meters long and 15 meters wide.

The competition evaluates the athletes' performance according to the rhythmic coordination of music, basic body posture, dance movements, mastery of melody, and understanding of music, dance steps and other aspects. The music of Sports Dance will not exceed 4 minutes and 30 seconds.

Depending on the scale of the competition, there are 5 to 9 judges, who score according to the six aspects of basic technique, musical expression, dance style, choreography, clinical performance and on-field effect stipulated by the international judging standards. 1992, the international standard ballroom dance was listed as an Olympic performance item.

International standard ballroom dance was introduced to China in the 1930s, and developed rapidly in the 1980s, with Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom and other countries to carry out exchanges. 1987 held the first national international standard ballroom dance competition. 1991 held the first national sports dance championship.
